North Oldham defeated Spencer County tonight at Spencer County. This was a barn burner. North started the scoring off in the first quarter 7 to zip. Spencer then matched up score for score. Score was 14 all at halftime.

 

Teams traded scores in the third quarter with the score 21 all at the end of three quarters. The difference was the kicking game. North blocked a punt that resulted in a shortened field and touchdown but the extra point was blocked. North led 27 to 21 in the fourth. Spencer followed with excellent field position on the onsuing kickoff and some big penalties. SC drove in for the TD in the fourth, kicked the extra point and led 28 to 27 with less than five minutes in the game.

 

 

Here is where big time athletes make the difference. Spencer kicked off deep to North where Andrew Tuller fielded the kick on his five yard line. Tuller broke behind the wedge, squirted free, cut to the sidelines and outran the entire Spencer team.

 

North went for two and failed. Score was 33 to 28 at that point. North held Spencer County sacking the quarter back and forcing them into long yardage conversion. North defense stood the test and held Spencer on four downs.

 

North took over with 52 seconds left and ran the clock out.

 

Spencer played an outstanding game against North. This is the fourth tough game in a row for North. CAL, Henry, South Oldham and Spencer.

 

Finally we get a home game next week against Trimble followed by Western Hills.

 

Billy Martin gets a HUGE win at Spencer and this sets the table for the District Showdown in two weeks at North against Western Hills.

 

This tough schedule is making this a stronger team. The long weeks in the weight room under Beano Chapel and Martin for the last two years are paying dividends now. This team is poised to make a deep run in the playoffs if they can stay healthy.

 

A winning attitude has been built by Martin in three short years. North in 3 A and Oldham in 5A will make a strong showing for the County overall this year.

 

Hats off to the Mustangs in defeating Spencer tonight on their field.

Yeah, I was going to say. How competitive is this district? Should be a good game between NO and Hills. Are we back to inter-district playoffs this year for the first two rounds? If not, the regular season district ranking could mean nothing for these teams.

With a win against WH, North will not have to leave Goshen until they reach Papa Johns.

 

I am rooting hard in 2 weeks for North against WH, and Henry against Spencer. The 3 way tie could be interesting for the #2 seed.
