Qualifying for State

Featured Replies

If an individual player qualifies for a state tournament in golf but the School's team doesn't, is it just an individual competition or what? Are the individuals not sponsered by their school any more since their team didn't make it? Why doesn't the coach go to this match, or oversee the players that are playing or take care of transportation? Is this the way all schools do or just Owen County?

You've got the first part right. In the boys regional tournaments 2 teams and 3 individuals qualify for the state tournament.

Those players playing individually are respresenting their schools, but obviously can't win a team title. I have never heard of a coach not going to the state tournament with a player who has qualified. Actually, that's kind of sad. You would think since the coach coached the player all year he would go to the state tournament with him/her. Plus, if they are a teacher, it's 2-3 days out of school for free! :D

It's sad that a coach would not want to travel to the state tournament to watch the golfer representing his school. I've never had a team qualify (came close in 2004), but I've had a couple of kids qualify as individuals, one did so five times. I was right there with them watching every shot they took.

What about the transportation part? Do schools bus kids to golf matches? Just curious on how the transportation for golf is taken care of.

My son's team never gets school transportation. One or more of the kids or one of the parents drive. The coach drives his own car - usually with no kids. At our old school, the coach would occasionally drive a kid or two (it was a private school).

All schools do it differently. My school allows us to have a 6 pasenger Astro van for golf team trips. It's MUCH BETTER than the bus, which is what we always used to take on trips.

At our school a parent can drive their kid to a match or tournament if that golfer is the only player involved in the event, but if other team members are travelling to the match, then a bus must be provided. In public schools, to my knowledge, this is the only, and legal, way to transport the team.

Our school doesn't permit us to use the school van. Something to do with a van not being authorized by the state as a safe vehicle for transporting students. Also an insurance issue.

We have always had to use private transportation (parents/coaches).

Transportation is $2.00 a mile for a bus in our district. Way to expensive to get a bus for 4-6 kids for every match. We have parents go or the kids that are able to drive, get theirselves their if their parents don't want to go! It's a shame it has to be that way, but it is just unaffordable any other way.

And a coach not going to state tourney is ridiculous, whether it's the All A or the big state tourney in Bowling Green, I have been and it's a great time, wouldn't miss it for the world.
