Newport 2008/09

Featured Replies

Newport finished 4-21 last year. What must they do to improve?

I hear that Newport hired a new coach - any word on who it is?

Newport will struggle again IMO - IMO they lack the ability to play as a team so hopefully a new coach will put that back in place. Newport use to have some good teams many years ago. They have talent in the school but as I said before they just don't play as a team.

Kent Vorhees is the new head coach. He will be assisted by Joe Bramlage. Word is that they will be having some freshmen games this year as well. I've also heard that former Bellevue player Mindy Merrit is helping out with the freshman team. Can anyone confirm this?

Vorhees should be a good addition for Newport. Hopefully he will clean house of the ones that are only there for themselves.

Vories will do great things at Newport. He has some talent there already to begin with, and he does a good job at getting the most out of his players, as seen last year with Bellevue's Boys Varsity team.

I've heard that Mitch Hammond and Merritt, both former Bellevue students, will be coaching the Freshman team, hearsay though.

KYTIGER89: your hear say is right. I am looking forward to good things from Coach Vorhees and the LadyCats. He has some good talent who seem to be willing to listen and learn. A problem with a lot of the NPT student athletes. They are actually going to have a freshman team this year. That is first in a long time. I only hope they find a caoch who is willing sto stick it out with the Ladycats and build a strong team and program. NPT, has too many turnovers with the coaching staff at every level and all programs.

I was very excited to hear that the freshmen will field a team this year. Though many of these freshmen will likely need to play JV due to low numbers, it is not fair for them to not get a shot to play against kids their own age. This is definitely a step in the right direction for Coach Vories. :thumb:

Also, just as an fyi...apparently this is the first year in many that there is no turnover in coaching at the middle school level for girls' basketball.

Right now, things appear to be lookin' good for the Ladycats!! :ylsuper: Hopefully, these trends will continue until a solid program is established.
