Nelson County 24 Bardstown 18

Final. Great game.

Is Bardstown down this season Hearsay or is Nelson County just a good team? Or a little of both?

Maybe a touch of both. Nelson County is a pretty good football team. They boast a 300lb. offensive line, a 3 year starter running the option at QB, and a sophomore tailback who is going to be a star. They also have a nice kicker, who kicked a 40 yard field goal tonight with room to spare. This was a big win for them, they do not beat Bardstown very often, and I expect them to have a fine season. They were disciplined tonight, very few penalties and Bart Bruner has this team in ship-shape.

Bardstown has been ripped and criticized all off-season, but in a strange way, they battled like soldiers tonight. Their line is just not very good on either side of the ball, but they played way over their heads in the second half tonight. There is a passing game. Not completely there just yet, but there were signs of some life throwing the ball tonight. Our #42 Rashaun Phillips is a beast, he is college material, and at times tonight was a sight to behold. We have some guys, like Hickman and Harper, who can flat out play. Our kicking game sucks.

Bottom line, despite all the criticism, despite all the naysaying, this 2A team in a "down" year nearly knocked off a pretty good 6A team in an "up" year. We were fighting, we had life, I think we're going to be OK. If the schedule doesn't wear on us too bad, I think we'll be ready for Danville come October.

We'll have fun before the game in October, regardless :sssh:

Yes, my house is staggering distance from Tiger Alley.

Sounds good to me :thumb:

Good analysis, Hearsay. :thumb:

I was really impressed with how Bardstown fought back after falling behind 17-0. Lot of mistakes by both teams, which is to be expected first game of the season.

To Nelson's credit, they kept their cool about them when the Tigers made their late run and seemed to have all the momentum, and the Cardinal defense played much better than expected.

A lot of credit for Bardstown's comeback has to go to their undersized defensive line, especially #62 Cody Kramer (I hope I spelled that right). He made a ton of big plays in the second half, and I'd be shocked if he's anything more than about 5'5" 150.

Nelson County came out and drove it right down Bardstown's throats with a 40 yard Quentin Brooks TD. The Tigers generated little offense in the first half, though they did have a 53 yard TD run by Harper called back on a phantom block in the back call. Nelson got a long TD run from speedy Alex Downs and the long field goal, and led at the half 17-0.

Bardstown came out fired up in the second half, scored on the opening drive to cut it to 17-6. Nelson made it 24-6 on another Downs TD run, but Bardstown got a long pass play from Keaton Hall to Trey Cochran to make it 24-12, and a nice drive after a fumble recovery and a Phillips 1 yard TD plunge to cut it to 24-18. Bardstown got the ball back with 1:53 at their own 30 and drove it, but had a first down pass in Nelson territory negated on what I felt was another phantom holding penalty. On 4th and 9, Tigers completed a pass to Nelson 35 that was inches short, and Nelson knelt on the ball to end the game.

The officiating in this one was absolutely and positively awful.

I'm usually pretty forgiving of the guys in stripes, but they were quite shaky. Several calls had me scratching my head.

Nelson Co is much better than what they played in this one. They had 3 or 4 fumbles one of them inside the Bardstown 15 yard line. Another was a snap over the punters head which gave B-town the ball on NC side of the field.

Bardstown also made mistakes that hurt them. Nelson was forced to punt and Bardstown had 12 men on the field. Nelson Co scored 2 plays later. Both teams will be much better next week.

I thought that NC's offense would be more potent, but to me very one dimensional, no passing game shown, but defense was better than expected.

Bardstown, I hope will see in the game film that Ricky Harper is a very good running back, I was disappointed he didn't have more touches, he impressed me.

Both teams have a lot of work to do if they want to go deep in playoffs.

It was each first game, and it showed, wish both the best of luck

Well, most option teams would prefer not to pass if they could help it. Plus, NC had several lost fumbles, including one as they were knocking on the door inside the Tiger 10. You could fairly argue that they left some points out on the field.

Harper was indeed impressive. It will be interesting to see how Clark tweaks the offense to get him some more touches.
