Was on ESPN Recruiting Insider where they list the top HS players by class.

In Class of 2009 they list around 400 players. Here are the KY players they had listed which includes 11 in that class:

 

Jon Hood--Rated #100 in Top 100 players; #21 ranking in shooting guard position. Grade of 78

 

Ballou, Penny, Sykes given grades of 65. Sykes is listed as a 7 footer from North Hardin?? Who is this guy??

 

Crawford, Ethan Faulkner, Strange given grades of 64 (Ethan Faulkner ranked #79 at the point guard position) Stange from Pineville grading this high??

 

Cox, Jenkins, Jones, Phares given grades of 40. Jenkins and Phares with a grade of 40?? Way too low I would think!!!

 

Players not listed: Jonathan Ferguson, Evan Faulkner, Middleton, Sanford, Donovan, Macon, and Collins among others.

 

With the exception of Hood the KY players don't get a lot of respect in their national rankings What are your thoughts about the ESPN rankings??

Other than they are just rankings!!!!

ESPN's recruiting coverage has always been pretty poor. I wouldn't think much about it.

They do not devote as much to it as Rivals or Scout, but I usually feel there evaluations are solid as far as ranking talent.

Aaron Watts of McCreary Central is on there. However, he is at the base 40 with no information.

A 40 means they have not reviewed the player. Those ESPN rankings have been like that for some 2 or 3 years now and have not been updated since. They have zero purpose. Does a 40 rating = multiple mid and high D1 offers?

Does Ethan Faulkner getting a grade of 64 mean they have evaluated him recently?? If they were evaluating Ethan recently it would have to have been with the DS All-Stars and they would have seen Phares, Evan Faulkner, Ferguson, Macon, Donovan, etc. Ferguson is not even listed anywhere and to say there are 400 players better than him across the country is like throwing darts at a map and none of them hit anywhere near Sandy Hook. Derek Smith has beat or barely lost to some of the best players and competetion across the country over the summer and only has 3 players anywhere on the list of 400+players (Richie, Ethan, and Jon Bevins). All those three grade out low with the possible exception of Ethan who grades a 64 which puts him at the #79 best point guard in the country by their rankings. If there are 100 better shooting guards in the country than Ferguson then I have got to see these guys play. I don't put much stock in their list.
