2008 Central

Recommended Posts

Defensively Lou. Central will be unbelievable next year anchored by 3 Major D-1 Prospects in DT Cobble (possibly the most dominating player in the state next year), LB Wilson, and LB Patterson. Central will be strong, big, fast, and experienced on defense. Their defense alone should make them the favorite to repeat as state champs.

Offensively, Central does have alot of questions to answer, more so than the other 3A contenders such as Belfry, Breathitt, and Tilghman. Not only did they lose QB Leland Banks and underrated HB Darrell Taylor, but they also lost their FB Wadlington, their top WR/KR in Terrell Holstein (700 yds receiving, 11TD), and a large portion of starting linemen. Banks, Wadlington, Holstein, and Taylor combined for well over 3300 yards of total offense. Lou. Central has exceptional athletes that will fill the void, but anytime you lose production like that there will be major questions.

Coach Scroggins has cemented his squad beyond the contender status to champion status.... the Jackets will be the rightful pick to win 3A, but the road will not be easy with so many other 3A teams returning a ton of depth including State Runner-Up Belfry who will return nearly everyone from last season's 14-1 squad who outgained Central in the Championship.

I would think that despite losing some horses on the offensive side of the ball that the offense will look better this year because it will look more like a Scroggins coached offense with more double wing sets and more triple option which on the high school level is a beast to prepare for. Not sure who on the roster is going to replace Wadlington on that D-line but who ever it is will have some big shoes to fill. Bringing back 7-8 starters and having some guys that didn't start but played alot back means that the defense that looked like the best in the state in the playoffs should pick up where they left off.

Their defense will be sick next year.... flat out sick. Possibly two of the best overall defenses in the state will reside in 3A next year between Belfry and Central, and Central could very well be the best defense in the state when it is all said and done.
