It is that way in Raceland.

It can be done, and is done at high schools all over the state. To start with you have to have a quality coaching staff, not just a quality head coach. You have to have assistant coaches that are capable, willing, and can be trusted to take care of practice without the head coach present.

 

Coupon is right it is done at Raceland. Coach Randy Vanderhoof is the head football coach, and experiences great success. He has a very qualified and capable coaching staff, with two or three assistant coaches who could easily be head coaches at any program in the area.

 

Coach Vanderhoof also is the Head Baseball coach, where he is successful as well. He has several quality assistant coaches who can easily run practice for him and could be head coaches as well.

 

Coach Vanderhoof is also the freshman Girls Basketball Head Coach. Again he has two assistant coaches who do a great job of doing things to make sure the girls are ready for the season. He is also an assistant Girls Varsity Basketball coach.

 

Raceland's Varsity Assistant football coaches T.J. Maynard and Mike Salmons are also assistant Varsity Basketball Coaches. Assistant Football Coach Gary Fannin is also the Boys Head Track Coach.

 

We, at Raceland, keep our coaches busy, so they don't have time to think about job openings, that is how we keep our coaches so long.

It will be difficult to do, but I think he is more then willing to attempt to do both. Im sure he will keep many of the same assistant coaches that have been around the program for the past 5+ years. Whether or not they are willing to take care of the football responsibilities during the spring is yet to be seen. Coach Hughes will do the best he can with both jobs, but it will be difficult and a very busy man throughout the entire year.

With the problems LC is having with the football program the coach should be 100% football, 12 months out of the year. If coach Hughes had tons of experience, and a half dozen great assistants then yes, he could probably handle both. To take a chance on him being able to handle both is not fair to the students, or the programs. Lewis needs Quality coaching, communication and committment for these kids, not something that is going to be difficult.

I understand completely what you are saying. I was just adding to the discussion. I was more or less saying that for a coach to be the head coach in multiple sports, he needs a quality and willing assistant staff, which is no easy task to find. I hope Coach Hughes has success.

It also may not be fair to the coach! I hope that he has success in both roles, but it will be difficult to handle the great baseball competition he will see year in and year out and change the football program at Lewis. I hope he has great support from the administration and community as well as quality coaches on his staff in both sports, for his sake.
