Here's one a very senior umpire was asked and wasn't sure on and neither am I by any means:

Runner on first takes off on the pitch in an attempt to steal second base. Slides into second, throw is a little late, second baseman attempts to dig out the throw which consequently hits the runner but then becomes losdged in the runner's back pocket. No one realizes this, second baseman is frantically looking for the ball, runner gets up and races home.

Maybe I'm missing the obvious here but it was an interesting discussion at the time. what do you guys say?

Hard ball might be right the rule book says lodges in the defensive players or umpires uniform or equipment, it doesn't say offensive teams.

The correct call would be that with the ball being lodged in the players uniform and it happening as said above. The ball is dead and the runner gets second and third. The reason why is where the runner is at time of pitch.

Dead ball runner gets 2nd and 3rd.

How in the world would a ball get lodged in the runner's pocket? Must be one big, loose pocket. :D

Rule 8-3 Art.3 Each Runner is awarded....

f. one base beyond the last legally acquired base, if in the umpire's judgement the runner was attempting to advance at the time the ball becomes lodged in an offensive player's uniform or equipment.

The runner only gets 2nd base.

Hardball was right.

On another note:

If the ball got lodged in his pocket as he was diving back into first base on a pick off move he would stay at first since he was not attempting to advance at the time the ball

The rule reference is dead on....however, the umpire might rule that the player had legally acquired second base at the time the ball became dead and send him on to third. One base is the award on a lodged ball in equipment or uniform regardless of whether the player is on offense or defense (or an umpire for that matter). Once,I had a pitch find its way into my ball bag and had to make the award. The catcher ran around the backstop three times trying to find it.

That is funny. I would have liked to have seen that.

The way I interpret the rule he would have only gotten 2nd base. In order to get third he would have had to legally aquire 2nd and in the umpires judgement try to be advanceing toward third when it became lodged.

CK...You are correct....I skipped over the "while advancing" requirement. If lodged in a defensive player's uniform under the same scenario, the award would be third base if the runner had acquired second before the ball became dead.

PS....Yes...it was funny...the only reason that I was able to know where the "missing" pitch was that I keep a max of three balls in each ball bag and I discovered that I had four in the right hand side.
