KABC voting for POY

Featured Replies

Head Coach and ALL assistants are eligible to be members and any member gets one vote. As of the present guidelines, a coach can vote for a player on his own team. So a large school with 6 assistants can have 7 votes for their own player if they choose.

Now, for coach of the year, a head coach cannot vote for himself, but his assistants can vote for him. They are now considering changing their voting policy. I think this might explain how Hopson did not make player of the year in the second region but was considered the second best player in the state.

Is UHA staff paid members of the KABC? If not they should be. Annual dues are only $15. In the past, players could not be voted for if their Coach was not a member of the KABC.

When I was a member, it was even more than that. As a program, we paid for the MS and elementary coaches as well as the HS and MS AD's to be a member and encouraged them to be involved and attend the coaching clinics. They would then get a vote for POY honors.

So, a school, very realistic could have 20 votes. A larger district maybe up to 50.

If that's accurate, the whole process and award is tainted, IMO and they should eliminate it as part of the state tournament ceremonies because it is so ripe for abuse - Hopson's non-selection was a mystery to me - it's no longer a mystery; now it's a joke.

Starting next year (2008-09) NO PLAYER OR COACH OF THE YEAR will be elgibile to win unless the coach is a member of the KABC

That still doesnt fix the problem of all coaches including middle school coaches who can all vote for one player or one coach.

Maybe coaches that are members should only be able to nominate players from their team, but not vote on them. The way it is now you have to trust the ethics of coaches. I believe most coaches do the right thing and vote for the player who they think is the best. Remembering that a coach's opinion will obviously be different than a fan of a player from a certain team. I have no problem with not being able to win the award if coaches are not paying members in the KABC. The KABC is working hard to improve the game and help out coaches and players so schools should be paying members.

That has always been the rule.

This year's ballot said you could not vote for your own players.
