Sweet 16 Moment of Silence?

Featured Replies

I just tuned into the Sweet 16 on the radio, and they were doing a moment of silence. Does anyone know what for?

Thanks////

They said the mans name, but I didn't know him.

Mason County's Punk Griffin.

Excellent individual, who passed away in late 2007.

Mr. Griffin knew more about 10th Region basketball than everybody on this site multiplied by 50! He was such a great person and will be missed greatly.

I had the pleasure of sitting with him the past 4 or 5 state tournaments.

Having the vacant seat at press row was a nice touch. Punk would have been humbled to be so honored and to have the entire areana stand in his honor would have reduced him to tears.

The ironic thing about the vacant seat at pressrow was that Punk always sat in the endzone, near the end of the tables.

Great man, quite a legend.

I miss looking down there and seeing Punk wearing his brightly colored, slightly oversized, sportsjacket.

A true legend............and will Mr. R.J. "Butch" Scharmolie please report to the scorers table!

You have got to explain this one....this sounds like it might be good.

I'm sure that some of the old-timers on here will remember the 80s when John Pong was the voice of the state tournament.

Butch Charmoli, a little wispy, older gray-haired man served in a similar capacity with the KHSAA as present day Julian Tackett.

Several times each game Pong would summon Charmoli with a now-famous (to us old guys) ..................."Aanndd would Mmiiiisssttteerr Rrrrr. Jay. Butccccchh Cchhhhaarrrrmolliiii, puleeze report to the scorrrrerrrss table."

Charmoli was inducted into the Dahaars Hall of Fame in 1988.

When Charmoli passed away they had a similar moment of silence, reviewing all of his accomplishments etc.. When the tribute ended John Pong concluded it with one more summons to the scorers table.

It was one for the ages.

Things I remember about past state tournaments right there with Happy Chandler singing "My Old Kentucky Home."

For years I was the P.A. announcer for the St. Joseph Bluejay Classic and occasionally just for the heck of it would issue a ......Aaannndd wouuld ........

The older coaches/officials in attendance would crack up.

I don't mean to correct, but the P.A. guy was John Tong. He was the P.A.

man for Louisville for years.

Thanks!

So far this week I've called the Greenwood Gators - Dragons
