Double Overtime Final

Real happy to see Paintsville get this one. Hope them the best in the championship.

I left at halftime...

Shelby Valley was down 27-7 in the 1st half. They battled back, but Paintsville was just a little bit better tonight.

Wow, sounds like a tale of two halves. Shelby Valley may of given too much energy to make the come back they couldn't close the deal. Heck of a game for these two teams, congrats to Paintsville and good luck at Rupp.

I was there doing the stats for this game... This one had it all... The big comeback.. The great finish at the end of regulation... Players putting it all on the line. Absolutely awesome game!!!

 

Grim had 29 for Paintsville.. Landon Slone had 15/18/4 blocks... Not sure about names for Shelby Valley, but #3 (Justice, I think?) carried them down the stretch.

 

Shelby Valley's fans had some classless chants -- No place for that stuff.

Shelby Valley played a terrible first quarter and found themselves down 20. They clawed back with their defense and took the lead. Grimm hit a shot to tie the game at the buzzer to put it into overtime for Painstville. In one of the biggest coaching blunders I have ever seen with Painstville with four guys on the floor with 4 fouls Valley stood at half court and dribbled out I guess at least 6 minutes of the 8 minutes of overtime. Also Valley was 13 of 24 from the charity strip in regulation. All that being said Painstville played and coached their guts out and Grimm dominated down low. I congratulate Painstville seniors because they had a lot of pressure on them to win a regional title and I think they will tomorrow night. Also the future is bright the next two seasons for Valley to make run to Rupp. I guess their was 5,000 people in the Expo Center tonight and it was a great night to be a basketball fan. Also to watch the two teams shake hands at the end was very cool. You could tell both teams had used all the gas in their tanks and had a lot of respect for each other.

Official attendance was a little over 5,500... Highest attendance for a 15th region game ever...

 

Valley definitely made a mistake by not attacking in OT... They played right into Paintsville's trap and just made bad moves when they did decide to go for the basket... The boys played their hearts out, though, and they deserved this win just as much as Paintsville.

 

There was one point late in the 4th, or maybe the first OT.. When #10 for SV could've drove and made Landon Slone pick up his 5th, but he backed out and waited for his team to set it up.. A different decision there could've made a different outcome.

I have been to watch the regional tournament twice (2006 and 2008) at the expo, here are my pro's and con's.

 

Pros...

- Gets teams ready for the state tournament with the floor size and bigger crowds.

- Bathrooms and concession stands are everywhere.

- Alot more seating than any gym in the 15th could offer.

 

Cons...

- Not enough parking!

- Fans cant go on the floor to celebrate with their team.

I honestly cannot think of one reason to ever take it back to a high school gym. 5400 in there tonight and everyone was comfortable.

I understand people questioning SV holding the ball in OT and double OT, but I think it had alot to do with Jacob Bryant and Ashley Hatfield being out of the game. Whenever Elisha would drive to the bucket Paintsville would send help, taking the ball out of his hands. The subs for Valley didn't appear too comfortable with the ball, and I think that may be why Booher decided to hold the ball. It didn't work out well for them, but if they had won people would see it differently.
