16th Region Tournament Officiating

Featured Replies

I know you guys get tired of hearing me take up for officials. But I have a great deal of respect for what they do.

That being said, I thought the first round of the boys 16th region was well offciated by the 9th region guys. I will never say they did a better job than did our 16th region officials, but I think they are very comparable. They called the game in much the same fashion as do our local guys. I think those guys did a fine job last night! It was very good to see quality like Charlie Chappie out there as well. Charlie may not be a spring chicken, but he is still very sharp, moves pretty good, knows the game well and, in my opinon, is one of the best officials in the state.

I know some of you know I ripped on the girls officiating in the first round, and I really think we have officials who could have done a better job in the girls tourney. There are a couple of officials on the girls side who I think do a great job (O'Hara and Pouncey), the others are just not very consistent in their calls. Not saying they don't know the game, they are just very inconsistent, which I really can't stand.

OK, beat me up and tell me how bad all these officials really are!

I will say thanks for the 9th region props!:thumb: I do have a question about the two we had last night in the Cov. Cath v. HHS game. Older gentlemen, one acted like he didn't even want to be there? Hands on hips during free throws, just seemed completely disinterested. I thought the female was head and shoulder above her two partners, though she has been ripped in other threads, I liked the way she called the game.

O'Hara and Pouncey are a couple of the best in the 9th, IMO. Wish they had been at Conner last night.

Was this a boys game? If so, I would think the female you are talking about is Marla Gearhart. She will be working the boys state tournament this year. She is very good. The other two, I don't know who called up there last night, but might be able to find out.

How far of a drive is it for these officials and how much are they getting payed to call these games?

I am sure compensation was worked out, with gas at 3.20/gallon. Depends on where the guys are from, but at least 90 miles from closest spot in 16th region, some probably travel well over 125 miles.

$65 per game and 30 cents per mile.

GoRadio I am like you in that I have a tremendous amount of respect for officiating in any sport. I have always said that I have witnessed a very few games in my years of sports where an official actually cost a team the game. There have been a very, very few instances where imo that has occured.

To me anyway, one can always look back at mistakes made that if not they wouldn't have been in the position to have bad call cost them. Some examples would be FT shooting, I have heard some blame officials for a game lost by 1 or 2 points when they (the team complaining) missed 10 free throws. Officials as well did not cause turnovers, mental mistakes, not executing their offense properly. One can get the idea, look at your own mistakes and I think that any can see that officials did not cost them the game, they did that on their own. Same thing goes for baseball, football, softball and the like.

Having said all of that (and I certainlybelieve it) I have as have others stated that there is one paticular official in the 16th (that a lot of people around the region like by the way)that imo gives my favorite team a bad call in any and every situation that he can intentionally. I have seen other games in basketball and football that this man has called not involving my team and I thought that he did a pretty good job. I can however still look back at some of the games that he has called and saw mistakes that my team has made that his (imo cheap called game) would not have mattered as much. This man has done the same thing in football in the past as well. I have heard one other school complain about this with him as well. I will not name him in a public forum like this bc imo that would not be proper to do so. These are JMO and I must say the opinion of a lot of other level minded people around that are not "chronic complainers" and hardly if ever cririsize officials.

Can any official in any sport make a bad call/call's....Yes, hello!! they are human beings and human beings make mistakes.

So, all in all I am very respectful and supportive of our basketball, football and baseball officials. I have in the past been on all sides of it...... player (age's ago:eek:), coach (youth sports), referee (basketball) and basebal umpire (all levels of youth sports). So, kudo's to al of our officials that put in the time that it takes to officiate our games, you can't have game without them ;).

(p.s., with baseball season just ahead....lets PLEASE bring back the "crack" of a wooden bat instead of the "ping" of metal :irked: ......I know, it will never happen but I can still hope).

I am off of my soapbox now and.....My name is oldrambler and I approved this message. :thumb:

If your coach believes what you are saying about that official, can't they scratch that person from doing their games? I also have the utmost respect for all officials in every sport.

$65 per game and 30 cents per mile.

Thanks.

It's dumb then. Why pay officials more to ref a game when you have your own refs also driving the 125 miles? Who decided to do this and how was it decided?

Thanks.

Some referees are biased towards certain teams in their region. We all know how refs can control a game, so wouldn't you want the team that goes to state, to be the team that won by their playing or by the officiating?;)

On the flip side and I believe more of an issue than the one you stated, is parent/fan seeing the official who made a call in a regional tournament game that they did not agree at the county fair, grocery store, restaurant and making a snide comment to the official.
