I'm not for sure what the final score was because my 2 yr old daughter decided to vomit on my wife with 4 min to go. So needless to say we made an early exit. It started out with Central taking a double digit lead, but Cumberland fought back and took the lead early in the 4th. Central tied it up and won it in OT.:thumb:

My overview:

 

With a 13th Region team coming to play the 12th Region, I expected a little home cooking - and the Raiders had some in the first half, but were playing outstanding. I think the Raiders got the benefit of the doubt it the first half on the defensive end. By the second quarter, the Raiders had built a 28-10 lead and looked to be in complete control. However, Cumberland capitalized on unforced turnovers on the Raiders end to close the halftime lead to single digits. Not much "coaching" was done on either side in the first half, in my opinion.

 

The second half was different. Cumberland started out hot and tied the game and eventually went ahead. From there, the Raiders continued to fall apart and were kept getting called for turnovers and fouls by one ref - a short, stocky ref that had conversations with Cumberland players while it was a dead ball, etc. By one ref, the Raiders were called for 21 turnovers/fouls out of 28 calls made by that single ref. Several times the game was very tense and very, very aggressive. It appeared that a fight would break out at any time because of the shoving and pushing, and a few nearly did. Starting the fourth quarter, I'm thinking the Raiders led by a comfortable 10 points but again, Cumberland whittled down the lead and eventually took a 55-50 lead. McCreary ended up tying the game at either 57 or 59 all and missed a shot with 7 seconds remaining to win the game. Guard #33 for Cumberland was very, very... how should I say this... argumentative with the refs on every single foul or turnover against him. I was surprised that he wasn't called for a technical, however, the referee that did most of the calling against the Raiders was the one conversing with the player.

 

In the overtime, the Raiders took command after the first basket by the 'Skins. Aaron Watts made a three, then the 'Skins got a layup. They fouled in the backcourt as the Raiders were taking the ball up court and Adam Swiger made a pair of free-throws. With a miss from long range on the 'Skins next possession, Phillips made a pair of free-throws that sealed the game after being fouled to preserve time from the Redskins.

 

Not exactly sure how many points Watts had, but he shot the lights out. McCreary still isn't playing well for a complete game. For about 11 minutes of the first half, they were unstoppable and if they played that way the entire game, they would have won this game by 30+. However, that is a big if. The Raiders will need to step up their play if they want to win the district championship.

I was with a team last year that came TO McCreary and had 32 fouls called against them to MC's 10. One ref called 3/4 of them and it was a three man crew. They shot 30+ more FT's then we did and we had a kid ejected on what other ref's in the region called a mystery to them after seeing the film.

This game was at McCreary. The one ref wouldn't have cost McCreary the game should they have lost it. I mean, he did bail the 'Skins out a lot. If McCreary would have lost it, I think the blame goes to the coach. Why don't you call a time-out and settle the troops after giving up an 18 point lead? The last few home games, Jonesy has just set there. However, in the final 5 minutes, he actually did get up and do a little play calling.

 

The Cumberland coaches seem disinterested in their team. It looks like it's just ran by the players and their athletic and size wins them their games. Only twice did I see any coach stand up - once, whenever McCreary opened up a 10 point lead a couple minutes into the game and the second time is whenever a foul was called against their BIG guy; he cleared the paint on a rebound and was called for the foul, the coaches jumped up and yelled something and was T'd up.

Sometimes you want your kids to try and handle it on their own in February so they will get used to it in March. Come March Raider Rob would have called a timeout and settled the troops. I hope this adversity helps them. I think a win of this caliber, after being up huge, losing the lead, and then coming back will help them in the long run. They didn't play well at all in two of their last three games and they went 1-2. One of the players said after losing to Rockcastle: "We didn't take them seriously," he continued, "we just took it like 'hey, we put our jerseys on and we're going to win." After losing they met and were hell bent to make a statement, and they did against Whitley. But they traveled out of region and were picked apart, which happens a lot when out-of-region.

Yes sir, there are a lot of ifs and question marks in your ONE SIDED STORY. The last time I checked a high school game does last 32 minutes, not 10 or 11??? A lot of your story here (or should I say the short BOOK you have written) is not even worth commenting on, but I would like to point out that considering MCC doesnt have a player over 6'1" it seemed very convenient for them that all 3 of Cumberlands front line players were in foul trouble in the first quarter including their best player Johnson getting his 2nd early in the first quarter sending him to the bench for almost the entire first half. There wouldn't be any reason to include that in your story would there? Also, from your onesided view on the MCC side you must not have seen their player dive on the floor forearm first extended to the face of #33 on that one play that #33 spent a little time conferring with the official??? Having said that, this was a game between two good teams that was a rollercoaster ride for both teams where in the end the home team made every free throw they shot and also shot extremely well from 3 point land the entire night to get the win. Cumberland will live to fight another battle or two this year, maybe a few more! Congratulations to the Raiders on the win!

I would still like McCreary's chances. They didn't play well in the second half and still were able to win. I mean, you don't go up against another team by 18 points if you aren't in good. Like I said, I think the refs gave McCreary the benefit of the doubt in the first half, but Cumberland's "best player" did the fouls that he was called for. McCreary was faster and quicker to the ball and to the basket in the first half, and Cumberland's bigs couldn't keep up and they fouled in the post. You know that just as well as I do.
