NobizLikeShowbiz Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 Ryle wins at St. Henry tonight in Overtime. Maley did not play. St. Henry hit a 3 at the end of regulation to force overtime and had another great look at the end of overtime to win, but could not connect.
NKYBOY1487 Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 This was very tight and good game to watch. I know Ryle was missing its best player, but St. Henry showed they still have some fight in them. \ Not that it was a reason St. Henry lost, but officiating was ugly for both teams last night. Senior Andrew Baker has been playing well for the Crusaders and has to keep that up. And senior center Zach Dedden finally got back to action after a week of being sick. The Crusaders have been strugling but I have seen some bright spots lately. Sophmore Ben Bessler is giving them a great spark. He made his second straight start last night and played well on both ends of the floor. Juniors Dave Zumdick and Cameron Speed have both seen enought varsity minutes now that they seemed much more relaxed and are playing there games. And sophmore Jake Hils had worked himself into the starting lineup until an ankle injury on Monday at practice.
NKYBOY1487 Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 On the floor I really like what I saw from Ryle's two guards #4 and #3 really are nice players. #3 hit some big shots down the stretch. He struggled from the line but his 3pters won it for Ryle. Ryle has a lot of young talent and has much to look forward to in the future. #24 is very good shooter. And #35 has a Seniors body already. #15, Helmer I believe looked totally overmatched last night. I've heard good things about him, but Joey Swikert #14 picked him 3 times and had almost 2 more steals if he could have grabbed the ball.
The Great Game Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 Ryle wins at St. Henry tonight in Overtime. Maley did not play. St. Henry hit a 3 at the end of regulation to force overtime and had another great look at the end of overtime to win, but could not connect. I was at the game and it was rather sloppy. Ryle's soph's (Mcliesh, Coleman, Nichols) made the difference in this one. As stated above no Maile and Helmer was in foul trouble all night. Just an opinion but Ryle may want to think about scrapping the current offensive set they are using. It may be that the team is not running it right but it looks like everything is happening 15-20 feet from the basket out near the top of the key. Just about every time they went down inside, which wasn't too often, they scored or were fouled or were able to kick it out for an open jumper. Any win on the road is still big no matter how it gets done.
Just a Fan Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 Ryle does have some nice young players. Mcliesh, Ahern, Coleman all played well. Helmer was in foul trouble early and sat out a majority of the first half. 2Quick fouls in the 2nd half and he did not play again. Until he got into foul trouble he was playing well. Ryle needs to limit their subs to situations and not take all the scorers off the floor for extended periods. Nice win for Ryle on the road. They played hard in the 4th qtr. to pull it out.
frmwaydwntwn1212 Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 Ryle ended up sweeping St. Henry in 3 very badly officiated games. I only saw the tail end of the Freshmen game but here is something to chew on. Since his starters did not play very well in the first half, they were still winning by 9 or so, Ryle's Freshmen Coach played the entire second half with his bottome five ,one starter and another part-time starter. The parents were saying he had never done that before in a game. Ryle stretched out the lead with these players and won without the game ever being in doubt. Ryle's JV won despite not having Tate Nichols to rely on inside. This is the first time they've played without Tate and played a decent game. Outside of McLeish, Nichols, and Willoughby the JV team just doesn't have the natural basketball ability. Ryle has a bright future but I don't know how many kids from this JV team play next year. Not trying to flame just stating an opinion.
NobizLikeShowbiz Posted January 9, 2008 Author Posted January 9, 2008 As a few have already stated the officiating was awful on both ends. I now realize why it is so easy to receive your license in northern kentucky. The 3 sophomores for Ryle really looked good last night. Mitch played very well, especially down the stretch. If he can work on his foot speed over the summer he could be real tough next year. I was very impressed with Nichols, played very good defense, in fact had 5 or 6 blocks, but he does a nice job of staying out of foul trouble and keeping his hands straight up. Coleman looked solid as well. Needs to work on putting the ball on the floor but looked like he had a nice stroke. As The Great Game stated Ryle seemed to run their offense 15-20 feet from the basket. I do not think its the offensive sets they are running I think its more of Ahern not being able to penetrate to the basket. He is just not quick enough to beat people off the dribble. He had numerous oppurtunties to drive and kick the ball to the wing he just couldnt create, and when he did he tried to take the ball all the way to the basket. To begin overtime Ahern had 3 turnovers in the first 2 minutes of the period. He seems to play afraid sometimes. IMO. On a side note, Dave Faust, IMO is the best coach in the 9th region year in and year out.

The Great Game is right in that Ryle's sets all revolve around the perimeter there are no screens set inside and nothing resembles going to the basket off a cut. If Ryle goes to the basket, it is off the dribble. I don't think this helps Ryle's troubles scoring.

Not trying to flame just stating an opinion. I don't totally disagree with your opinion other than that some of these players are being played out of position and haven't had alot of opportunity to show what they can do. With a JV team you should be seeing what you have for next year, so you run with your first five, most of whom play on the varsity also, and then a whole different five to see what they have. You then subsitute with the players you have left on the bench into those two sets of five. You also need to keep the two sets of five togehter over a few games so they can get some continuity. The issue I see is that you have players getting big minutes on the JV that are getting big minutes on the varsity also, so you are not getting proper evaluation of the other players you need to be taking a look at on the JV team. Once again just an opinion.
frmwaydwntwn1212 Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 Here is my issue with many programs JV teams: why keep so many kids. If you want to build a program, you don't want to have 12 guys dressing for a JV game. Keep 8 JV guys, 4-5 of whom dress Varsity as well. Then keep 6-7 Varsity only guys. This would give you a 14-15 man roster for JV and Varsity. This gives time in practice to develop those 14-15 players. I think Ryle has 22 JV and Varsity players, or they did at the beginning of the year, that is way too many. Anything above 15 is too many. I think coaches are afraid to cut players, especially at Ryle.
casual observer Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 Congrats to Mullins and his Raiders on a tough and poorly officiated overtime win at St. Henry last night. Raiders have struggled but I predict good things if they can keep their moral up. Sophomores looking good but don't understand why the coach takes his starters out of the game so early, would like to see them work through their rough spots and pull it together. Maley has become a more mature player and is better focued than in previous years. #21 is a silent valuable asset to the team, they seem to play better when the coach leaves him in there. While not a showy player, his defense is very effective and he makes good players look even better,a great and rare asset for a team. Good Luck to a team who is working hard to find their way.

With the amount of players Ryle decided to keep which is now I believe 20, how about having 20 players that make JV and varsity combined, but 10 who play varsity and 10 who just play JV. Then as a reward for improved play have 2 or 3 of the slots where players can move up and down. IMO there should be no juniors on the JV team. It takes minutes away from younger players that need to be evaluated for the future.
NKYBOY1487 Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 Maley has become a more mature player and is better focued than in previous years. Really? Didn't he sit out the game because he was ejected the game before on Friday.
NUMBER 1 FAN Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 Really? Didn't he sit out the game because he was ejected the game before on Friday. I did see him getting the other players water during the game, which I thought was a humble thing for him to do for the other players. I am sure some may think that to be a small effort but for a starter regardless of the sport it is a large step towards leadership. He also encouraged each player as they came off of the floor. I would certainly rather see him laugh about what was being said than react negative. The fans were directing name calling towards other players also. It did not seem to be a big deal to any of the players.
