mcpapa Posted January 8, 2008 Author Posted January 8, 2008 58 turnovers....seriously? Do people really wonder why no one can watch this stuff... If I were a parent, coach, scout, student, or someone with no other obligations I may have watched. Being none of those, however, I wasn't there. Your point is one that could be debated from now until doomsday. Like any other sport, HS girls basketball, played at an elite level, is very enjoyable to watch. In fact, from the standpoint of a purist, it can be argued that it's actually a superior product than boys/mens basketball because the lack of athleticism (compared to boys/men) results in more team play and exceution of fundamentals. 34 baskets and 58 turnovers was probably not a pretty sight. I wasn't there so I can't say if it was stellar defense or poor ball-handling and shooting. But I've seen many games that were just plain ugly to watch; and this may have been one of them. And there will continue to be ugly basketball games on every level.

That must explain why there is such a lack of attendance at Mason County games, a team that has held a state ranking last season, this season, has 3 of the top players in the region, yet you take the band away from the games and it looks like for the most part a empty gym. You walk across the street to a St. Pat girls game and you find the place full.
thomasmoredad Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 I was at the game last night. Well over half of the turnovers were due to some very tough defensive pressure. Both coaches did a wonderful job of changing up the defenses. I can't remember more than two trips down the floor with the same defenses being played. Holy Cross is an excellent team that are very fundamentally sound, that with the inexperience of a very young St. Patrick team that played maybe only two juniors at any one time and there only senior with a cast on her arm seems to be the basis for the number of turnovers. The game was a very hard fought game the number of times that you saw players on the floor for loose balls and those stepping in to try and take a charge made the game very entertaining. Congratulations to two very well coached teams you will see a lot from both of these teams in the future.

I saw 2 or 3 St. Pat games and thought they improved a lot over the course of the season; and I was wondering how they looked this year with the coaching change and the graduation of Rutherford.
thomasmoredad Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 Coach Douglas is doing a great job. Most of the girls from sophmore down to the 8th grade have played for Coach Douglas in middle school and grade school so they are very in tune with her style of coaching. The juniors and senior are also doing very well adapting to the new style of play. The Lady Saints will be fun to watch during the district tourney. I wouldn't want to draw them in the tourney I think they can be dangerous because they are to young to be scared and have enough talent to give anyone a good game.
