CovCath bounces back from the poor showing against LaFayette and pounds the Tigers at US Bank Arena in Cincinnati.

Sort a makes up for the Football game! :D

CovCath was a totally different team today.....

Greg Spencer did a great job as the fourth color man for Mark on the CovCath Internet Radio Network today. Listen to the archive of this game...

Mitch Schover was the star of the game with 20pt's on 6 three's....

JD Schmerge was 3-3 from behind the arch...

CovCath shot 25/50 (50%) from the floor and were 11-15 (73%) from behind the three point line. Just a tad better than at home on Friday....

Anybody who can work in a Tony Yates/Cincy Colisium reference is all right in my book.

Nice victory for CCH. Who was the more tired team today? My guess is St. X.

When was St. X's last game? According to khsaa, it was over a week ago.

My bad, I thought it was Cincy St. X who had a dogfight last night with Elder at the Pitt. Sorry for the stupid post.

Cincy St X did play but it was against Winton Woods right after the CCH game.

Right, I saw on Yappi where they smoked em by 30. Cincy St. X must be verrrry good. I would have liked to have seen CCH play them again in the Buckeye/ Bluegrass classic.

Colonels get warmed up

Hours after cold shooting game, they regain touch

Less than 10 hours after escaping with an overtime victory over winless Lafayette on Friday night, Covington Catholic's players were rolling out of bed for an 11 a.m. Saturday tipoff in the Cincinnati Scholastic Play-by-Play Classic at U.S. Bank Arena.

Drained from a week of school exams, reeling from an atrocious shooting performance the night before and facing an unfamiliar set of rims, Covington Catholic seemed destined for a sluggish start and a cold shooting touch.

Instead the Colonels scored 17 of the game's first 19 points and shot 73 percent from beyond the 3-point line to beat Louisville St. Xavier 67-39.

"It just goes to show you never can tell," Covington Catholic coach Mike Listerman said. "We were like two different ballclubs (on Friday night and Saturday morning)."

Junior point guard Mitch Shover knocked down six of CovCath's 11 3-pointers against the Tigers on his way to a career-high 20 points.

Senior center Aaron Noll added a season-best 11 points for Covington Catholic, nine of them in the second half.

CovCath entered the contest shooting 33 percent from beyond the 3-point line on the season, including an 8-of-34 (24 percent) showing against Lafayette Friday. The Colonels padded those numbers with a blistering 11-of-15 (73 percent) performance versus St. Xavier.

"When we got the ball into the (post) and (St. Xavier's defense) had to collapse, that left people open (on the perimeter)," Shover said. "We've got so many good shooters who can knock down (those) shots."

Shover, a 58 percent 3-point shooter on the season, connected on six of eight attempts from beyond the arc. Senior reserve J.D. Schmerge scored all nine of his points on 3-pointers, going 3-of-3 from long range.

Ten players scored for CovCath (6-1), which is ranked No. 1 in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches' poll. All 15 players on the Colonels' roster got into the game.

"When we jump out early, our rotations are a lot different," Listerman said. "We get to use our depth a lot more and make other teams have to push hard and wear down a little bit."

St. Xavier (1-5) displayed its own 3-point marksmanship, hitting six of 12 attempts in the game, but the Tigers offset that sharpshooting by making 21 turnovers on their way to their fifth straight defeat.

After trailing by as many as 15 points in the first quarter, St. Xavier started the second period with a trio of quick 3-pointers to cut its deficit to six points at 23-17.

The Colonels answered with 3-pointers from Shover, Schmerge and Chris Roll to take a 29-21 lead into halftime.

Eight of the nine field goals in the second quarter were 3-poiners.

After again falling behind by 15 points, the Tigers clawed back to cut their disadvantage to 39-30 following a basket in the paint by Clay Naiser with 3 minutes left to play in the third quarter.

It was the last time the Tigers got their deficit within single digits.

CovCath scored the game's next 12 points to take a 51-30 lead into the final period.
