Dayton 73 Ludlow 65

Featured Replies

Who saw this one coming???

Dayton's young team plays a good all around team game with 4 double figure scorers, led by another sophomore, Tim Massey with 16.

Kyle Williamson had 23 for Ludlow.

I know I didn't. Good job Dayton. I'm impressed.

This one surprises me just a bit. I certainly think Ludlow has more talent but thats not what always wins games. Congratulations to Coach Dilts and his Devils..

I don't know Joe, Dayton has an awful lot of talent, just it is blatantly obvious sometimes that it is very young talent without experience in the varsity game...

Congrats to the Devils. Its been a very tough past fewyears for Dilts and the gang down there, maybe they are turning the corner to respectibility.

You make a good point. One thing that is certain is how much Coach Dilts cares about the Dayton basketball program. One thing that has always impressed me about him and I think will eventually lead to more improvement throughout the Dayton program is all the work that he does with the Saturday Youth program that he has run for the last several years. I think the way he gets to know and gets involved with the younger elementary kids in his district is to be commended and an example more coaches should follow.

I will give Dilts that but he also needs to get many of those kids playing in more competetive environments. I do tip my hat at him for running the Saturday Youth league though as it provides a place to play ball for many of NKY youth.

:thumb: You probably have a better feel for how competitive the league is then I but as you said in your post he takes time out of his day every Saturday to give kids the opportunity when I'm sure at times he could be doing other things. There are a great many gyms in NKY I'm sure that sit empty on Saturdays simply because no one is willing to come and open the place up. Kids today learn at a very early age what coaches come to see them play and happen to know their names and they remember that as they get older and have more of a desire to play for a person such as Coach Dilts..

Great point. One of those gyms is Highlands. I am part of a group donating my time at the revival of such grade school leagues in my town and we are using one of the grade school gyms to accomplish this. This is all put together by a couple handfulls of men/women who want to try and create a better basketball feeder system. STarting with Kindergarten through 2nd grade. So far it has been awesome. Two games under our belts and we are feeling really good about it. Seeing the improvement in just one week is extremely gratifying. Teachign the kids teamwork and allowing them to have fun is essential. Its all about the kids :thumb:

I certainly dont want to sound like I was calling the league non-competetive because my son played down there 3 yrs and we may not have had a barn burner every week but when it came time to play the Dayton boys it was always a tough game. A few other teams also came to play as well so I think it was fine. I just meant that Dilts needs to get those kids playing against other big school competition so they get even more prepared to face the Ludlows/Bellevues/Villas/SilverGroves, etc. I heard he took a group last summer down to a Georgetown BAsketball team camp. Now that is what I am talking about. Go downstate and let those boys experience a little.

:thumb: I understand what you were saying and it is true the smaller schools need to do things like what you are involved with at HHS. Sounds like a great program that will only make the HHS basketball program that much better. Youth programs in all sports are the lifeline of any schools athletic program. Good high school coaches understand that and work with those volunteers to help to make the program even better and the rest just sit back and do nothing. As a Head Coach there is far more then the Xs and Os anymore that you need to have. You have to work with your kids throughout your school and develop positive relationships with your community. Parents and kids today are looking for alternatives if they don't like what they have at home they start looking for other options.

Anyway we have gotten off topic some so once again my congrats to the Devils on their Conference win and good luck to both teams as the year progresses.

Actually, in the 2 years Dilts has been the Varsity guy, he took 3 teams to Georgetown the 1st year (ranging from MS to Varsity), and last year he took 2 I believe. In addition, he had 2 teams playing summer ball this past year, so I'm thinking that will probably be his "system" for several years. He's shown that he's not one to sit on his hands and watch and wish without the effort. As far as his Youth League, it certainly fills a void to allow all school kids an opportunity, however IMO, it will always have some teams that will simply be unable to compete due to low numbers in school, less than "adequate" coaching etc. It probably beats the option of what some less talented students would be doing if the competitive teams were the only alternative:thumb:

:thumb: You make several very good points and once again my hat goes off to Coach Dilts. He is obviously doing the rights things and I'm sure it will start to pay dividends for all his efforts. I think taking the teams to Georgetown is an invaluable experience for the kids and one that all kids should get the opportunity to do or at least something similar. There are alot of these types of camps throughout the state and no reason why schools can't take advantage of these opportunities.

Excellent points and glad he is putting in the time and effort. I hope the Devils do well.

Just wanting to make a point about the Dayton middle school teams, a boys team with only one 8th grader and the rest 7th graders played in an 7th and

8th grade league and only lost one or two games all year. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, the Dayton middle school girls team went undefeated or only lost 1 game all season. Also, both varsity teams are very young dominated by juniors and sophomores. So the youth leagues are defently paying off in a big way and many thanks to coach Dilts and his family for their time.:ylsuper:
