XIX. To an Athlete Dying Young

by A. E. Housman (1859-1936)

The time you won your town the race

We chaired you through the market-place;

Man and boy stood cheering by,

And home we brought you shoulder-high.

To-day, the road all runners come,

Shoulder-high we bring you home,

And set you at your threshold down,

Townsman of a stiller town.

Smart lad, to slip betimes away

From fields were glory does not stay

And early though the laurel grows

It withers quicker than the rose.

Eyes the shady night has shut

Cannot see the record cut,

And silence sounds no worse than cheers

After earth has stopped the ears:

Now you will not swell the rout

Of lads that wore their honours out,

Runners whom renown outran

And the name died before the man.

So set, before its echoes fade,

The fleet foot on the sill of shade,

And hold to the low lintel up

The still-defended challenge-cup.

And round that early-laurelled head

Will flock to gaze the strengthless dead,

And find unwithered on its curls

The garland briefer than a girl's.

This is tragic and all my prayers go out to his family and friends.

I just got back from WKU last night while visting my daughter and she told me about this. She said that someone had fell from the top of a bunk bed in their sleep and hit their head on the corner of a desk in the middle of the night.

Stories like this only make me worry more for my kids when they are away from home.

This one is tough... My best friend, Lank's brother called me Sunday and informed me of this tragedy while I was out working. Needless to say I am still in a state of shock, and Lank will be deeply missed. He was not only a outstanding athlete, being able to play WR on the 2004 scottie team and then make the transition to QB his senior year '05 football team, but a great person. In respect to his family, i'm not going to discuss what happend to him, or any details like that.

RIP Lank

Lank had family ties in Monroe Co. as well, he was the first cousin of the QB/RB at Monroe Co. it was great to watch them duel it out their senior year. It was easy to see he was a competitor and he will be missed by many...
