Which Ashland scrimmage did you see? Ashland did look bad against Highlands but beat a very good Montgomery co. squad 92-85.

I tell you what, I wish I would have planned my snow bird trip alitte better. I wish I could witness the return of Zornes to "Kouns Court".

I watched them at Fairview this summer. I don't need to see them to know that they are overrated. They always are. Thomas is a good player and Coleman is pretty good.

So what exactly does Biggs need to do to prove himself? I agree he has not yet accomplished at Ashland what some of the others have but he is in only his second year. They guy averages 20 wins a season and has won four straight district titles and a regional title. Two state wide coach of the year awards, numerous regional coach of the year awards, and has only been a Head Coach for 6 years. give him some time and maybe he will accomplish what some others have?

 

 

Contrary to public opinion outside of the boundary confines of the city limits, Ashland coaches have a short tenure on Blazer Blvd. Ashland Tomcat Basketball is under the same scrunity as the University of Kentucky when dealing with Basketball and the head coaches. No true Ashlander is ever satisfied with just a 25 win season. True Ashlanders expect to compete and win the region year in and year out, anything else is not acceptable!

 

Many coaches in the area in boys and girls have many wins in a season but cant win the big dance in Morehead. Examples would be Russell Girls in regional play and the Rose Hill Boys cant even get out of their District. That mind set may be fine at those schools but not here at Ashland.

 

Buddy Biggs will do a great job if given the time he needs but like I said the tenures at Ashland are short in comparison to other schools because we expect our kids to uphold the tradition of the Tomcats which is like no other in the state.

agreed. But he already has won the big dance. It was in Maysville though in a tough 10th region. If given some time he will do the same in Ashland.

In order to be a great coach you must know when to discipline, when to control, when to get on the refs, when to let your players play, know what makes your players respond, and know how to be political whether you like it or not.

 

Flynn should have won more with what he had. To much controlling of his players. Good players need freedom not a jail cell of x's and o's. I personally talked with him and enjoyed our conversations over the years that he was here. Good luck to him.

 

This is the first time I have ever heard a disciplined offense being referred to as a jail cell of x's and o's. All good coachs have some discipline on the offensive end of the court it is really just a matter of degrees. Paul Patterson and Wayne Breeden's teams were all very disciplined at the offensive end as were Mike Flynn's teams. I think that is a compliment to all three coaches.

During the last half of the 80's this area began to change in coaching styles and the game was slowed down to a coaches game. 35-40 years ago it was not unusal to see high scoring games in 90's and 100's. What has changed? Coaching has changed. When good players are not allowed to create in a set that becomes a jail cell. It would be like telling Harold Sargent (Ashland Tomcat Legend) not to shoot the ball because he is supposed to make this pass here that pass there. That is my point. These teams today have great players but not wise enough coaching to let their players play. Coach Jeff Hall was wise enough not to over coach when he was at Rose Hill with O.J. Mayo. You could make the statement that he had all the talent, well so did the Ashland 1961 team. For what it is worth, I am Ashalnd all the way and cant stand Rose Hill Athletics but I do think Jeff Hall was a great coach and O.J. a very good over rated player.

I understand you have to allow players some freedom to create within the confines of your offense. I just think a good coach has some discipline within his offensive attack so kids know the difference between a good shot and a bad shot. The goal of any offense should be to get a good high percentage shot where you have the floor balanced for rebounding support and to allow for defensive transition.I just do not think that demanding that the ball go to the post or that the ball get reversed before you settle for a 3 point attempt is asking to much of high school athletes. I do think though that once you get a good look out of an offensive set that kids should be allowed to take the shot.

:laugh: I hope your last line was meant for comic relief. Fairview already beat Greenup. No everyone isn't overated. Elliott isn't, East isn't, Fairview isn't, and Rose Hill isn't.

 

One thing you can count on is that Ashland and Boyd will always be overrated. I watched Ashland in a preseason scrimmage and Boyd struggle with a less than average West Carter team. A team that lost by 50 last night mind you.

I bashed, as Dudley Dawson would have you to believe, by stating that I believe that both Ashland and Boyd are overrated, stated a fact that West lost by 50 last night, and forgive me but I think Greenup and Russell have done the bashing themselves by giving up 135 points and scoring 21 respectively.

 

Just for the record if, and that's a big if, I bashed 5 out of 16 teams then that would not, by any stretch of the imagination, constitute "most". Most, I believe would be more than half, which would mean I would have to "bash" 9 teams.

 

On the other hand I have been complimentary of East, Elliott, Fairview, Flemings younger talent and Rose Hill. I feel those teams are deserving. By my count that means that I have "bashed" 5, complimented 5, and not commented on 6. That seems pretty balanced to me.

 

By the way, Booger always seemed like a filthy word to me. Therefore, I chose to use the proper name of the character from Revenge of the Nerds. This is not an attempt to disclose anyone's real identity.

In the past 5 years there have been four 25 win seasons in the entire 16th region, Elliott Co and Russell last year, Morgan in 05, and Rowan in 04. If the measuring stick is 25 wins then you better line up a moving truck for Coach Biggs.

Wow, your true colors and basketball IQ are no secret any longer. Mr. Mayo was the #1 player in his class. Not only that, you could wrap up each and every player you've had at Ashland for the past decade and what would pop out would still pale in comparison to Mayo. I have no idea how you have theorized that Mayo was a "very good over rated player". Again, I say WOW! Hope Ashland can come up with a properly rated player tonight to combat Mr. Selby. Good luck!
