#2 You make the call

A-1 shoots and misses, B-5 and A-5 go for rebound and have held ball situation! Arrow pointing to Team B. Team B takes ball out under basket and on the inbounds pass A-1 that is guarding the inbounds pass, intentionally deflects ball with their knee back out of bounds. What do you got? Does arrow switch?

Kick Ball, if defender is the one that intentionally kicked it. The ball should be thrown in again by the same team. IMO

Is it illegal to hit it with your knee? I'd say switch the arrow.

A kick does not change the arrow. It's just out of bounds to the other team.

OK. Looks like if it was intentional with the knee, its a violation. Therefore, since it was not touched legally inbounds, the AP arrow stays.

Lets change it a bit.

A1 has the ball for the throw-in. He puts the ball out over the line (ie inbounds) and B1 ties him up. Jump ball.

Whose ball?

The throw-in isn't considered complete because it wasn't legally touched, so there's no change in the possession arrow.

I was thinking that the rule said "below the knee."

Team B is still taking the ball out and the arrow does switch to Team A because the ball has been put in play. Remember the arrow does not changed until the ball is put into play.

I don't think that's correct. I think the kick violation would result in B getting the next AP. Look at the casebook 4-42-5.

And to be exact, the arrow does not change until a legally passed ball is touched inbounds. So, in my example above where the ball was held over the inbounds line and B grabbed it , the AP would stay with A because the ball was not "passed" in.

IN both scenorios the Arrow stays with the team that had the ball for the throw in.

In the first one, due to the violation, kicked ball(which is now any part of the leg) the Alt possession was not used do to the violation by team A, so now team B gets the ball for the violation and not the arrow, so they keep their arrow for the next alt possession throw in since it was not used.

In the second one, Team B did not throw the ball in yet, so the arrow did not change because it has to come in play before the arrow is switched like was said above by Pizza Boy.

I don't agree with either decision the rules committee has on either of these.

On the first one, you are penalizing good defense and letting the same team get another arrow, I mean they are getting the ball back because of the violation, shouldn't mean they should get the next arrow too, but we have to do it that way until it's changed.

And on the second one, if you hold the ball over the line and the defense ties you up I think that is good defense as well and are penalizing them again for good defense, should be if it's touched while in play, the arrow changes, which in that scenario it does. So I just think they should both be looked at and reward the defense. But until they do we will keep the arrow the same in both cases.

Scenario 1: Team has already received possession of the ball. Therefore, the arrow has switched...whatever happens thereafter will be considered a different play and be called accordingly...out of bounds same teams possession.

Scenario 2: The guy on the ball should never touch the ball...if he does then that is a technical. Coach should either praise him for being smart enough to get a tech on other team or kick his butt for the 5 second call he's about to receive.

Let me pose a scenario (I saw it happen this summer).

Team A was down 1 and pressing with 4 seconds remaining. Team B is thinking they are going to hold the ball out of bounds and let the time run out but Team A player guarding the ball jumps out of bounds towards team B's inbounder. What's the call?

1. The ap arrow doesn't change until a passed ball is touched legally inbounds.

2. It is not a T on the D if the ball is over the inbounds area. Jump ball.

Scenario 1. Wrong, arrow doesn't change till ball comes in

Scenario 2. If ball is across line it's not a T, ball is in play, Held ball. Nowyou are correct if they reach across and grab ball if it's not over the line inbounds.

If Team A's player touched Team B's player out of bounds then you have a T. 2 shots and Team B's ball at center line. If he didn't touch him, and just jumped out of bounds to be jumping out of bounds you have a Violation for leaving the floor for unauthorized reason. It used to be a Technical foul also, but was changed last year to just a violation.
