NKY 6A Playoff Scenarios

Featured Replies

In NKY 6A district action tonight, Campbell county defeated Simon Kenton, while Boone Co. won a thriller in overtime against Ryle. This sets up a 3-way tie for the 2nd place position in the district playoffs.

A 3-way tie is broken by adding up the number of wins earned by the tied teams' opponents (excluding games played between each other), and then counting only the four best "opponent win" totals for each of the tied teams -- in this case, Ryle, Simon Kenton, and Campbell Co.

Now, with two weeks left to play, we're a long way from knowing how this will all shake out. But for the sake of discussion, below is listed each of the teams in the tie. Below each, are the teams they've defeated -- or could defeat in the final two weeks. Next to each defeated opponent is the number of wins each could end up with. Confused yet? ;)

Ryle

Newport 1-3

NCC 7-9

Holy Cross 4-6

Conner 1-3

Fern Creek 6-8

Dixie 4-6

Simon Kenton

Conner 1-3

Holmes 2-4

Russell 8-9

Holy Cross 4-6

Newport 1-3

Campbell County

Tates Creek 1-3

Pendleton County 3-5

Conner 1-3

Mason County 5-7

Holmes 2-4

NCC 7-8

Dixie Heights 4-6

This explains the tie-breaker a little more clearly:

b) TIE-BREAKER (more than two teams). Should three or more

teams tie for the a district position based upon the win-loss

record, the position shall be determined by the following:

i) If one of the teams has defeated each of the other teams

tied in games contested between them, that team shall be

declared to hold the highest position, and the winner of the

game between the remaining teams (if less than four) shall

be declared the second highest position. In the event of

more than three teams being tied, where one has defeated

each of the tied teams, that team shall be declared the

highest position, and the tie-breaking procedure shall be

re-applied for the remaining tied teams.

ii) If the tie remains, each team tied for the position shall

receive one point for each game won by any four of their

defeated opponents in all games, except for the games

played between any two of the tied teams. All games played

shall be counted in applying the tie-breaking procedure,

including out of state games, with the exception that a

defeated school may be counted only once in the procedure

regardless of the number of games played against that

particular school. Teams awarded forfeit victories (whether

or not a forfeit fee is paid) may count the defeated opponents

of the forfeiting team, provided the game was not replaced

on the schedule.

I have a question about this. Are you allowed to count the wins of a team you're tied with, as long as you don't count their wins against one of the tied teams? Or are you not allowed to use the wins of one of the teams you're tied with at all?

You cannot count the wins against teams you are tied with.

Ok. I couldn't figure it out, the way the rule is written. So, in other words, SK couldn't earn any points at all from Ryle's wins, Ryle couldn't get any points from Campbell's wins, and so on. Right?

Correct.

Correct.

Gotcha. Thanks! :thumb:

Looking at the schedules I think Simon is locked at the Four spot, and if Ryle wins against Dixie, then it's all she wrote, and it will be Boone, Ryle, Campbell, and Simon.

Personally, I think Dixie will beat Ryle, and Campbell will beat NCC, leaving the final week to be the deciding factor.

Dixie is 4-4.

By my best calculation, here's how it stands:

Ryle has 18 points and can earn a total of 28 points.

Simon Kenton has 11 points and can earn a total of 21 points.

Campbell County has 10 points and can earn a total of 25 points.

I'm not sure their class enters into it. The way I understand the wording of the rule, you do not count wins against teams involced in the tie..i.e. Ryle, Simon Kenton, and Campbell. That would take out DIxie's win over Simon Kenton, leaving them with 3 wins -- not 4.

Gotcha. Wrong interpretation. The only wins that cannot be counted are one team's win against one of the other teams they are tied with. Any and all can count wins against Dixie. All of Dixie's wins would be points for any team that beat them .

When pulling the 4 teams that one team has beaten, if one of those 4 is one of the other two teams they are tied with, they have to find another one.

Dixie is 4-4.

The 4-5 I have listed is their current number of wins (4) and the number they could end up with (5).

If they're 4-4 and play 10 games, wouldn't 6 be the number they can end up with?

Now I have a headache.
