Several Southeast Kentucky high school teams played today at LMU and will continue tomorrow (June 1) in some of the first summer season games. For those that watched, were there any teams or players that surprised (good or bad)? Or was there any surprising news about any of the teams?

Cumberland participated over the 3 days and went 8-0. They defeated

 

Cawood

Pineville

Lynn Camp

Cumberland Gap, Tn

Bearden, Tn (State Runner-up in TN last season)

Cosby, Tn

Hancock Co., Tn

Buckhorn

Cumberland was the best team I saw at LMU. The Skins aren't quite as explosive as last summer, but they'll be better inside and should be more consistent than last year.

 

Pineville is probably a top 5 team in the region with a strong group of seniors. They led Cumberland late, but a last-second tip-in by Desmond Johnson gave the Redskins the win in the tightest game I saw.

 

Cawood finished 4-4 and played well at times and terrible at others, beating Middlesboro by eight one day and losing by 27 the next. Middlesboro has a pretty good team with a good starting five and should be improved this year. Harlan finished 2-2 in the camp but played too early for me to get to see them.

Cumberland showed signs of what they are capable of being next year, especially with a 68-54 win over a highly rated Knoxville Bearden team that has 3 starters back from a team that won 25 games last year and I heard made it to the state 3A finals in Tennessee. Immediatlely after the Bearden game which was Cumberland's 2nd game of the day, they played Pineville in their 3rd game and were not very sharp and struggled to the close win. After the Cumberland/Pineville game, Pineville then played the Knoxville Bearden team and got beat by 25.

The Skin veterans and Garfield Wilson are just starting to get used to playing together,they are also developing 3 or 4 young kids to give them the depth they didnt have last year, and are also playing without Paul David creech, a probable starter that is a very good outside shooter and excellent athlete, due to injury. Playing 20 plus summer games including the State AAU Tournament will bring this team closer together and when they get everyone healthy and have some depth developed I think they can be very strong this up coming year

Skins will have to carry the heavy burden of being the region favorites next year, in many people's minds, the last year of the school's existence. Those are big loads for the kids, coaches, and community. Johnson maybe the best player in the region as well. How will the loss of Simpson affect the team? He seemed to be there when they needed a big shot.

These kids havent gotten where they are by accident, they have worked extremely hard through weight lifting, spending time in the gym together and playing basketball year round. I think being one of the Region favorites is something they welcome and expect, they got a taste of it last year and down the stretch played extremely well. They will miss Kyle Simpson, he is a great kid that was a pure shot, and played tremendous on ball defense. Johnson, Leisge and Hogue will provide tremendous leadership and the addition of Wilson will make them a bear of a team to deal with inside. Johnson and Crawford from Corbin will probably be the two best players in the Region and Leisge may be the best all around point guard in the Region, Hogue and Wilson will also be among the top players in the 13th Region.

I got to see Bearden play twice, once agaisnt Pineville and once agaisnt Red Bird. They had 2 rotations agaisnt Pineville, where they subbed in every 5 minutes or so, and then agaisnt Red Bird, I think they may of played there JV, and still won. I heard they also beat Middlesboro with the same squad.

 

Red Bird and Middlesboro also had a close came on the 31st. The final score, Red Bird lost by 3, but really they lost by one, the score keeper didn't put two points on the board for the Cards. Red Bird had a chance to tie it at the buzzer by number 3.

 

Anyone know who number 1 and 3 are for Red Bird? Number 1 is a really hot shooter, he was shooting it from beyond NBA range and draining them, and number 3 seemed like the main scorer for Red Bird.

I didn't think they played that well down the stretch last year, except for the last week. I think the experience they have will help them avoid the February letdown they had last season.
