After reading over the article, while the stories of those individuals are compelling I think I will actually come down on the side of the attorney here. The evidence to the contrary is too compelling in my opinion to jump on the arson bandwagon.
May 28, 200719 yr Author One of the stories mentioned that equipment and furnishings used back in the 1930s and 1940s were stored in the basement and were undamaged by the fire. After it burned, it was dozed over the top. That may be one of the reasons for the "treasure hunting" done at the site.
May 30, 200719 yr We lived in Ft Thomas at the time and drove past there early that night to go to my cousins wedding recption at St Joes in Cold Spring . When we drove past the traffic was backed up going up the hill to the parking lot and was actually lined up on US 27 for quite a distance . I have a memory wether real or not of saying to my wife that I was glad that we weren' t going there that night . About an hour or so into the reception the news spread about the fire and a lot of people left . Since we knew that 27 would be blocked we went down S.Ft Thomas Ave to Grand Ave to Highland Ave . We lived in the 8 hundred block of Highland Ave and when we tried to turn onto Highland I had to show my drivers license to prove that I lived there. Highland Ave was the main route between the fire site and St Luke Hospital . We walked down to where the CC Library is now located and watched the fire for a while . Then we walked to St Luke to see if we could donate blood and were told that there was enough being donated already. Horrible night, my aunt's brother was killed in the fire and also a fellow that I had worked with and his family were killed . A few months later excavation was started on Highland Ave for the 471 right of way . The emergency responders taking vicitims to St Luke were fortunate that Highland Ave was still open that night ,for it would have added maybe 2 miles to the trip to the hopital if it would have been closed.
