Ryle played solid defense and hit the ball pretty good. Got a very good pitching performance from Jeff Hatfield. His curve ball was breaking down and kept the Conner hitters off balance---only gave up three hits. Only some shoddy base running kept it form being a complete victory. The Conner pitcher stepped up in a difficult situation and did the best he could but had to rely on the fast ball to get strikes.

Thanks Web Gems. Good way to start the new season.

Hatfield spread out 3 hits over 7 innings, and once again the defense played tough behind him.

Ryle hitting leaders - Wags 3/4 2 2B's 2RBI's R - O'Hara 2B - DC 2 hits R

Sheehy 2/3 2 2B's 2 RBI's 2R...and the rest of the raiders chipped in with a hit each.

Hats off to Shane Taylor for stepping up and showing the younger players senior leadership. He doesn't pitch that much, usually closes, but he stepped up to the challange. Strong candidate for POY, IMO.

See ya tomorrow WG.

Welcome aboard deepthroat....glad to see your observation on base running was similar to mine. How's the water out there?

With Ryle's victory that makes 6 teams in the 9th Region Tournament.

Ryle, Cov. Cath, Beechwood, Newport, Ludlow, Dixie. Two pretty good ballgames tomorrow to determine the rest of the field. St. Henry/Boone and NCC/Highlands.

Wow, shame that out of St. H, Boone, NCC, Highlands, and HC, that only two of them will make it to regionals. And of the 6 teams listed above that have made it, there would appear to be a name or two that just isn't quite as deserving to be there as one of the teams that will be (or already have been) eliminated. Guess that's just the way life goes in district play, but the overall weakness in the 34th compared to the other districts is rather noticeable.

On any given day, anything can and sometimes does happen on the field. As we all know, that's why the games are played.
