First time in school history possibly that the Ladycats defeat Brossart in FP softball. Last week they beat Campbell County for the first time in many years.

 

They have won 4 of their last 5 including a win over Bracken County to match the Brossart/Campbell victories.

 

They are peaking at the right time as the districts are approaching.

 

Congrats to Coach Collins and the Ladycat crew.

The defense held Brossart to 2 runs for numerous innings and finally in the end the hitters did their jobs at the right time. After the past years this is a major accomplishment for these young ladies and to think we are only going to lose 1 senior for next season, things are looking up...you go girls.

This is coming from a person that just criticized the coach and the program last week, saying they never practice, the coach lacks strategy, and if they win its luck. Beating Bishop Brossart, Campbell Co, and Bracken co. the last week isnt luck.

Give Coach Collins some credit....

It is my belief that this group of young ladies have made these wins possible, these girls have played together for years, I still believe the program lacks leadership. Like any program at the HS level, you want to improve the program improve the feeder program.

 

And that means getting parents to realize they have to do some traveling and taking the team outside of the county. That means spending some money for private pitching lessons, camps, leagues and tournaments OUTSIDE of the HS season for them to play in.

 

In most situations that I am mentioning KHSAA rules prohibit the HS coach from directly and sometimes even indirectly coaching the team.

 

If the girls are not beginning to play softball by the 2nd grade level, I would have concerns on whether the girls are adequately prepared when they get to the HS level. And the rules of the league are important in developing those skills necessary for the HS. Pitching and catching. Throwing out and stealing bases. Bunting.

 

But if they do all that and still through elementary and middle school years, ONLY play in Pendleton County, they will not be ready come HS.

 

The top level athletes and players MUST have challenging competiton by participating in the NKY and Greater Cincy fast pitch softball leagues from 3rd/4th grade up till HS.

 

If not, the HS coach is playing catchup on the skills that are missing and can't do the strategies and things needed to be done at the HS level.

 

One last question, so the girls have made the wins possible. Do they have any responsibility in the losses too or is that all the coaches' fault?

This is one of the most ridiculous statements I have ever heard. I shouldnt even dignify it with a response. Playing together for years helps, but doesnt win games.. You dont win 5 out of your last 6 and most against quality opponents just by playing together the last few years. The Cincinnati Reds team this year played together last year and most of them have been on the team for years and they arent winning.. Just face it, Scott Collins is doing a good job and you dont want to admit it. They are winning because they are a well coached group of girls who work hard at what they do.

Is the Scaggs girl the only pitcher on this team?

We spend time taping and reviewing game films for other sports why can’t we take the time to at least look at the stats from previous games to position our fielders for certain hitters? For example, last night’s game, the opposing coach knew who are hitters were and where they tend to hit in the last game and he positioned his team. We beat them bad a couple of weeks ago and last night they were ready for us and took us 4-2.

They seemed to hit every hole we had on the field, yet we couldn’t get much past them.

 

As far as pitching goes, yes Scaggs is the basic pitcher we have and she does a great job out there. There are a 3-4 others and I know that 1-2 of them have been to pitching camps in the area. These other girls have seen some JV action but not enough. Some of them have practiced prior to the season but once it began, they maybe get their hands on the ball every once in a while.

 

Prior to the season, they should have been working on their own to get ready but we also should start practicing when the KHSAA allows, not a week before our season begins. With 5 gyms and numerous fields in this area some type of practice should have been started in February with the girls that weren’t in other sports. This has to be the biggest beef I have with the coaching staff and where all this frustration has come from. I never meant for anyone to take this as a bashing of the staff, just wanted an avenue to get suggestions on how to make things happen for the better of the team…

This can be done in the scorebook without videotaping. In the scorebook, it can easily be noted for L-7, lineout to LF, or a PO-4, pop out to 2nd, or a GO-5 or a groundout to 3rd or a K for a swinging strikeout and a backwards K for a watching strikeout.

 

Also, determination of where the hit is going will be affected by the pitch. An outside pitch and the batter tries to pull it will mostly result in a groundout to SS. So if you know you have a hitter that is only going to try and pull the ball and watches outside pitches, you can pitch them outside and a good chance either they will a)watch the 3rd called strike; b)ground out to SS. I know this because my son's team has a nasty habit of watching outside pitches for called 3rd strikes. Drives me bonkers for them and him to watch a 3rd strike go past.

 

That said, if that pitch is not on the outside but instead down the middle of the plate, it changes defensive positioning all around as the player can now get the bat head around on it and rip it past 3rd and into left field.

 

Videotaping in other sports is to figure out plays that the other team is running and besides plays on bunts and who is covering what base, not many plays in baseball that would be similar to the other sports.

I have an idea that would fix all of Pendleton Co. Softball issues with you. How about Coach Collins steps down (since he does nothing right in your eyes) and then you apply and take them to the Promise Land.. I think you can based on all your great posts.

I was at this Brossart/Pendleton game and I must say that the Ladycats are playing with a lot more confidence now as the season is winding down. Coaches always have a part when a struggling team is starting to play well. Good luck to PC the rest of the season and postseason.

Can someone gave me some info about PC

Pendleton had a good Saturday as the bats came alive and they swept a TH against Beechwood, Scott and Carroll County. 4 wins again this week.

 

Hopefully, they can keep this momentum over this last week of the season and into the district.

This past Saturday the Ladycats did have a great day on the ballfield and without Sara Scaggs who could not be there on Sat. The cats hit the ball hard and often with 41 total runs coming across the plate, Junior Allison Faugner pitched 2 games (15-0) and (13-2) Senior Rachael King pitched the cats to a (13-3) win over Scott. The defense played some of the best ball they have played all year they really looked like a different team on Sat. played with alot of confidence hopfully this keeps going, this is the most wins the Ladycats have had in a number of years.

To piggyback on it, their # of wins, 11-16, is the 5th best in the 10th region and is a far cry from their 2-25 record of last season and 2nd to last finish in the region.

 

As far as the region is concerned, Harrison stands 2nd with the most wins and Nicholas stood 4th if I remember correctly.
