You know, when did high school sports become solely about the elite level players? When did a college scholarship become the sole criteria over whether a sport, or player for that matter, was worthy of participation? Sports is about competition, physical challenges, mental preparation, teamwork, learning all of those skills and then some. Yes, the best do go on to another level and that is wonderful, but how dare we forget about the vast, vast majority who play for the love of the game!! Slow pitch does and always should have a place in high school sports for those who want to play it just like the last 3 or 4 golfers on the schools golf team should have a place to play. They're not going to win many scholarships either (exceptions at places like CCH and St. X noted). If we CAN field a team and players WANT to comnpete then by all means provide that opportunity!!

I guess it doesn't much except for the fact that the sport IS offered. It's just not the sport that they play in college. I mean honestly, has a kid gone from a frosh at a non-football school to a football school and been denied eligibility? Kind of tough to say it's for athletics when they haven't even played yet...

Remember, we're talking about two "different" sports here. They are not considered the same game by the KHSAA. In your scenario the kid WOULD be denied transfer to a new school if he had played, say basketball on the varsity level but was transferring because his school didn't offer football. It basically works out the same. Unless a school is concerned about how many athletes they can field at one time, there really is little to no drawback to having both sports. Dixie did it for years. Money could be an issue, but to me it sure helps out those Title IX numbers . . .

You know schools like Bellevue, Dayton, Ludlow, SG...etc. can not survive supporting both of those sports...although with the Title IX implications it may be worth being in the red...

I know. Just joshing. With the pressure this year to end in the black or at least in balance, the whole concept of red ink sends shivers up my spine.
