I posed this question in another thread and to a poster in PMing but felt it deserved it's own thread.

While Tubby's assistants have been lacking and Pitino's staffs have always been high quality, I have been intrigued that over the past 20 years Coach K's assistants have been pretty non-existent in getting head coaching jobs and then having any success.

Amaker got Seton Hall and Michigan but failed at Michigan. Snydor got Missouri and failed. Am I missing others? Have some had success and I don't remember.

For a Coach that is no doubt one of the greatest of all time and himself a protege of a great coach, why has there not been a deluge of Duke assistant's getting top jobs and having success as Pitino's have had?

Really baffles me.

Brey is a success.

Jay Bilas? He hasn't coached anywhere has he?

No, but it is obvious where the bulk of his basketball knowledge comes from...he is a BGP favorite...even for a Dukie.

Still only 3 presently? For the unbelievable quality coach he is, I would assume many more than that. I would assume that he would be equal with Pitino. Who probably is the best in my lifetime of developing players and assistant coaches to head coaching jobs.

He has had Quinn Snyder, Mike Brey, Jeff Capel, Tommy Amaker, and there are three on his bench now that will be head coaches..

What happened to his early assistants from the late 80's? Can't count the ones that WILL BE till they are.

You forgot one. Guy at TCU, whomever that was. So he has produced 5. Still, I would have thought more.

Why is Bobby Hurley not coaching? He seems to be a prime coaching candidate in the mold of a Travis Ford.

Hurley is a horse owner and trainer, as well as coaching middle school basketball.

Jumped to high profile programs to quickly?? Just a thought. I think that will make the John Pelfrey type guys valuable in coming years. The ability to get some experience under your belt in a program that doesn't demand winning as much and a little less pressure.
