Matchup: Ludlow Panthers (5-2, 1-0 Class 1A, District 4) at Bishop Brossart Mustangs (3-4, 0-1 Class 1A, District 4)

Kickoff: Friday, October 16 at 7:00 PM

Location: Mustang Athletic Complex (MAC), Alexandria, KY

Broadcast / Live Stream: Streamed live on NFHS / Audio broadcast via Mustang Broadcast Network.

A high-stakes Class 1A District 4 clash takes center stage this Friday night at the MAC. Holy Cross currently commands the driver's seat in the district at 1-0 following a 41-14 victory over Brossart. For Ludlow, a win sets up an encounter with Holy Cross for district supremacy. For the host Mustangs, it is a must-win situation to protect home turf and remain in contention for home-field playoff seeding.

Key Storylines & Matchup Notes

  • Ludlow’s Scorching Offense: The Panthers enter Alexandria riding a three-game winning streak, averaging 44.0 points per contest over that stretch and coming off a 51-26 win over Trimble County. Quarterback Miller Reed paces an explosive Ludlow unit (averaging 206 rushing yards and 150.9 passing yards per game). Reed has thrown for 1,056 yards and 12 touchdowns while adding 456 yards and 9 scores on the ground, joined by Jayden Watson (509 rushing yards).

  • Mustang Rushing Attack vs. Ball Security: Brossart moved the chains between the 20s against Holy Cross behind Bentley McKinzie (56 rush yards) and freshman Tommy Busby (59 rush yards). However, self-inflicted mistakes proved fatal: two interceptions, a muffed punt inside the 5-yard line, and missed red-zone opportunities. Quarterback Landon Spaulding (who scored both Mustang touchdowns on keepers last week) must keep the offense clean against a Ludlow secondary that has snagged 11 interceptions, led by Jaylen Stone (4 INT) and Andre Englemon Jr. (3 INT).

  • Brossart Injury Watch: Depth will be tested for the Mustangs after two-way anchors Brady Boruske (19 rec, 454 yds, 4 TD) and Quinten Tischner (team-high 76 tackles) were sidelined with injuries in the fourth quarter against Holy Cross. Their availability will be critical in matching up with Ludlow's skill positions on both sides of the ball.

  • Special Teams Swings: District 4 play featured wild special teams action last week, including a 92-yard opening kickoff return TD by Holy Cross and an onside kick recovered by Brossart’s Ben D’Alessandro. Ludlow kicker Finn McMillan has converted 21 of 25 PATs with a field goal, while Miller Reed handles punting duties (~37 yards per punt). Field position and ball security in the kicking game will carry immense weight.

Bishop Brossart 26, Ludlow 17 (Class 1A District Clash / Senior Night)

ALEXANDRIA, Ky. — On Senior Night at the Mustang Athletic Complex, Bishop Brossart leaned on an aggressive 3-5 defensive package and a career night on the ground from senior quarterback Landon Spaulding to take down the visiting Ludlow Panthers, 26–17.

With the victory, the Mustangs improve to 4–4 on the season, bounce back into district contention, and put themselves in prime position to host a first-round playoff game with a victory next week at Trimble County.

Game Recap & Narrative Flow

First-Half Control and a Late 110-Second Collapse

For the first 22 minutes, the Mustangs dictated every phase of the contest. Brossart’s offense opened the scoring by marching 52 yards, capped off by a 2-yard plunge from Tommy Busby to make it 6–0. In the second quarter, Spaulding engineered another 52-yard drive, culminating in a 1-yard goal-line push where Jaxon Miller alertly recovered a loose football in the end zone to push the cushion to 12–0.

Meanwhile, Coach Jake Martin’s defense—switching into a modified 3-5 alignment with constant edge blitzes—completely baffled a Ludlow squad that arrived in Alexandria averaging 44.0 points per game.

Then, the final 1:50 of the half unfolded into total chaos:

  • At the 1:34 mark, Panther playmaker Jalen Stone scooped a muffed line-drive punt, shed two tackles around midfield, and raced 45 yards down the left sideline for a touchdown.

  • Following a Brossart personal foul on the ensuing return, Spaulding was intercepted underneath by Ludlow's defense, giving the Panthers 1st-and-goal at the Mustang 4-yard line.

  • Brossart's defense bowed its neck inside the 1-yard line, using two Panther false starts and a huge backfield tackle by Charlie Rauch and Atticus Prost to force a 22-yard Finn McMillan field goal as time expired.

Suddenly, a 12–0 Brossart cruise turned into a 12–10 dogfight at the break.

The Second-Half Defensive Clampdown

Ludlow received to start the second half with all the momentum, but the Mustang defense came out of the locker room flying. Led by the interior trench play of Quinten Tischner (8 tackles, sack), Charlie Rauch (5 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 3 TFL), Jaxson Noe, and Jaxon Miller, Brossart threw Ludlow for repeated negative plays to force an opening 4-and-out.

The third period turned into an old-school field-position standoff, with neither team surrendering a point.

Spaulding Takes Over in the Fourth

With 12 minutes remaining and clinging to a two-point lead, Landon Spaulding broke the game open. Flushed right on 1st down, the 6'6" senior signal-caller broke into the open field for a monster 55-yard gallop down to the Panthers' 16-yard line. Three plays later, Spaulding called his own number from 3 yards out for the touchdown. Ryan Eldridge drilled the critical PAT to make it a two-possession game at 19–10.

Ludlow answered with 3:52 remaining when Miller Reed connected with Jalen Stone on a 50-yard strike down the sideline to pull within 19–17. However, an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the Panther celebration backed the kickoff to the 25-yard line, handing Brossart prime field position near midfield.

From there, Brossart’s offensive front and bruising back Bently McKinzie hammered the interior clock before Spaulding put the game on ice—scampering 8 yards untouched around the right corner with 33 seconds left. Eldridge's PAT stretched it to 26–17, and a last-second 34-yard Ludlow field goal attempt fell well short to seal the Mustang victory.

Player of the Game

·        Landon Spaulding (Bishop Brossart, QB): Named BMustangs.com Player of the Game. The senior signal-caller shouldered the offense down the stretch, racking up 272 yards of total offense (148 rushing, 124 passing) and scoring two clutch fourth-quarter touchdowns on the ground to close out the victory.

Next Up:

·        Bishop Brossart (4–4): Heads on the road to Bedford next Friday night to battle the Trimble County Raiders, looking to wrap up district play and lock down a home playoff date.

·        Ludlow (5–3): Returns home to host Holy Cross in another pivotal district matchup.

This was a good game to watch. Defensive slug fest for both teams.
