The Knights of Lexington Catholic had the bye week to recover from their 1-point loss to rival Lexington Christian. Garrard County is coming off their first win of the year as they beat Casey County 25-0. Last year, the Knights blanked the Golden Lions 38-0. It feels like it could be worse this year.

Lexington Catholic's offense has been really robust this year, though it took them a while to get started the last time out (weird circumstances, of course). Garrard doesn't really look to be able to slow them down at all, though they have had a couple of ugly slugfests. If the Knights get rolling, I think this one becomes a running-clock easily.

WEEK SEVEN GARRARD COUNTY FOOTBALL PREVIEW

Garrard County at Lexington Catholic

Series: Lexington Catholic leads 12-4

Notes:

-One week after opening district play with a victory, the Garrard County Golden Lions will look to make it two in a row when they travel to Clays Mill Road to face Lexington Catholic. The Knights enter the matchup ranked second in Class 3A.

-Garrard County and Lexington Catholic have a streaky history, meeting every year from 1993-2000, again from 2015-18, and now again in 2025-26. The series will continue next season when both schools make the move to Class 4A. Lexington Catholic holds a 12-4 advantage all-time, with 13 of the previous meetings coming in district play and the other three taking place in the playoffs.

-The Golden Lions dominated the early years of the series when both schools were Class A powers. In 1993, undefeated and ranked fourth in Class A, Garrard sewed up its second-ever district title with a 54-13 romp over the Knights in Lexington. The Lions blocked three Catholic punts and returned each for a touchdown, with Dwayne May, Michael Dailey, and Josh Gaffney each finding the end zone. Sheldon Burnside added 155 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just six carries. Much of the early-season media attention had centered on Lexington Catholic, a relatively new program that had played several highly ranked opponents close. After the victory, Garrard coach Jerry Perry told the Advocate-Messenger, “I'm tired of hearing people talk about elite teams. Garrard County's an elite team also!”

-Two years later, fourth-ranked Garrard returned to Lexington to face the third-ranked Knights and quickly found itself trailing 13-0. The Golden Lions responded with five consecutive touchdowns, however, rallying for a 30-13 victory. Jamaine Norris rushed for 143 yards and a touchdown, while Wayne Kiser scored twice - first on a 45-yard run and later on a 62-yard interception return. Standout linebacker Kevin Broughton piled up 18 tackles on the evening.

-Last week's victory over Casey County gave Garrard a modest three-game district winning streak dating to last season. The school record is nine consecutive district victories, a run that stretched across the 1994 and 1995 seasons and included two wins over Lexington Catholic. Among the memorable moments was a 35-8 victory over Frankfort in 1994, when Willie Hill led the Lions with 167 rushing yards and a touchdown. Win No. 8 also produced a program first, as Garrard defeated Paris for the first time, rolling to a 41-14 victory in 1995.

This will be a running clock in the second quarter. Catholic's JV sees a lot of PT n this game.
