What is the long-term viability of the current NIL Market?

I was reading an article where Curt Cignetti was being interview and he was sounding an alarm about the current state of college football. He was casting doubt of the long-term viability of the NIL market. 

He was not against players being paid, but that the long-term viability at the current rate, that Universities will not be able to financially survive. The 12-team CFP field last year along posted a combine $721 million in operating expenses. Which is over a 20% increase from the year prior. If it goes up another 20% then the universities are 2 1/2 years away from having an NIL budget that's more than the TV revenue for all the universities. Then it will be to late to have serious questions about how that gets funded.

Which leads me to this, what do you think needs to be done to level the playing field for the CFP moving forward?

I think it’s going to have to happen, there will be a collegiate level salary cap. Perfect example of how crazy it’s gotten is the NBA draft. This year anyone outside of the first round was making less than 3 million. Now you’ve got guy leaving the draft, going back to college and making 5 or 6, maybe even $7million a year. It’s nice that guys don’t have to make the NBA jump just to support themselves and their family’s but these numbers probably aren’t sustainable.

You can clearly see why, besides age, Saban "retired." He did not want to touch or be a part of the "Pay for Play" culture. IMO it is out of control.

Keeping in mind BGP's core purpose as a sports-discussion community, discussion of the the managing bodies specifically serving over high school, college, amateur, and professional sports leagues (KHSAA, NCAA, IOC, MLB, MLS, NBA, NFL et al), along with the officers, officials and the titles held by the individuals within those organizations is permitted on BGP. Similarly, high school and college/university administrators and officials, when discussed in a strictly non-political manner, are all permissible on BGP.

That is wild. Are we really going to have colleges going into debt to try to be competitive?

Yeah I don’t think anyone envisioned this current set up when NIL started. I think most people expected boosters/local businesses to want to help their schools teams with endorsement deals, advertising etc. NOT collectives from the schools paying players.

I am pretty sure some of us did here on BGP.  It became the wild, wild west overnight.
