Breakdown by conferences:

SEC- 7 (5 in top 10)

Big 10- 6 (3 in top 5)

Big 12- 5 (1 in top 10)

ACC- 3

American- 2

Sun Belt-1

Independent- 1 (1 in top 10)

If Alabama beats UGA then Oregon moves up and Big 10 has 3 in top 4.

If UGA beats Alabama, Bama is in all likelihood out.

Ohio State and IU stay in top 4 regardless of finish, unless won flat out boat races the other.

If BYU beats Texas Tech then Notre Dame is likely out.

Alabama finished the season as #1 seed in SEC Title game. Ole Miss, Texas A&M and Oklahoma all finished behind Alabama in conference standings and miss SEC Title game and get to sit home while each are safely in the CFP. Alabama meanwhile essentially plays an elimination game for them against a team they have already beat. UGA is in CFP regardless of results of the game against Alabama. 

I know, Alabama shouldn't have lost the first game of the year, but they essentially won their conference and are getting penalized. They'd been better off losing tie-breaker and finishing 3rd in the conference. 

I'm not sure of the fix for this, but if two teams that play each other are both in the top 10 going into conference title weekend, they shouldn't be penalized because one of them has to lose.

Honestly I think that is why the committee moved Bama above Notre Dame in the rankings this week. This way if Bama losses, they probably would only flip flop them and Notre Dame again. If they had kept Bama behind Notre Dame and they lost, they probably would feel like they would have to move Bama out. 
 

At least that is the only reason I can come up with for why they moved Bama ahead of Notre Dame. The committee had Notre Dame above them saying they believed Notre Dame was better up until this past weekend. Yet was nothing in Bama’s performance against a bad Auburn team that showed yeah this performance shows they are now better than Notre Dame. When they hadn’t thought so the two previous weeks. 
 

So imo the change was so they can keep Bama in it, if they were to lose the SEC Championship. They just would flip flop them and Notre Dame again.
