He was the Command Module Pilot for Apollo 8 (crew also included Commander Frank Borman and Lunar Module Pilot Bill Anders), the first humans to orbit the moon.

He was then the Commander for the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission (with Fred Haise and Command Module Pilot Jack Swigert).  You may have seen the movie.

A graduate of the University of Wisconsin, he atained the rank of Captain in the United States Navy before joining NASA.  He was one of the leading candidates to be among the original 7 Mercury Astronauts, but was passed over.  He joined NASA for the Gemini and Apollo missions.

True hero. The Apollo 13 documentary that was on Netflix is unreal and a true look into who he was as a human and a leader.

Documentaries of anything NASA or history related are always more interesting that any Hollywood production.  Apollo 13 is a good movie, but they ramped up the dialogue to make a polished movie.  Any documentary that has the actual NASA audio is always fascinating.  That the 3 men in space and all those on the ground in Houston could keep their cool for the whole time it took to solve the problem and get Lovell, Haise and Swigert back to earth safely is simply amazing.
