Ouch!

The LONDON NEWS JOURNAL covered them when they won state. I was sports editor there and covered it. I think that's where you got the mix up. The London News Journal and the Corbin news Journal was owned by the same people before the LNJ shut down. I'm telling you, the Corbin News Journal was there at the state, but they covered the Redhounds ONLY. I know for a fact, they don't cover South Laurel.

Well, I think what Jimbo was doing was including only the schools he covered.

I can't argue with you anymore, Les. You obviously know more than I do on the subject. I enjoy reading both the Times and the News Journals sports sections. I take an interest in all the area schools, including South Laurel. It is good to see talented young players from our area excell. I hope that Mr. McAllister will rethink his coverage of South.

Who cares what Jumbo writes. Most of his stories have scores that are incorrect or quotes from the radio show the coaches do after the games. I for one agree the Whitley Whiz, or whatever you call it has gone to the dogs the last year or so. I think that many average middle school students could write the articles I see in there.

A little rough there, Bubba, but I have to agree with you that the News Journal runs with the dogs as far as sports coverage goes. Williamsburg got more coverage from the problems at the beginning of their season than they have since play actually began. I have seen many articles in the News Journal about the Corbin players, articles that interviewed them personally about their goals for the season. I believe that there was even an article listing each player and their individual strengths. Where are the articles on the Whitley or Williamsburg players? There are other teams in our area that play hard and try even if they don't always win.

To be honest, and please don't take offense, I didn't even know that London once had a News Journal. I just do not believe that a newspaper can provide complete coverage and leave out players from their area that are deserving. It's not that I disagree with his choice of players that he listed, although as I said in an earlier thread I think Teague from Williamsburg should have been included (IMO, others may disagree) but he left out an entire school. I just don't get it.

If you did not know they did not have a London Paper then you are not an old South Laurel fan...Teague has a ways to go before he would be in the ranks of the area elite players.

no offense taken ...the LNJ won general excellence (best weekly newspaper in its category) seven straight years before shutting down. It was a pretty good paper.

You are welcome to your opinion on Teague. He is young and does need some maturity. I do not consider him one of the areas elite players but he will be in a few years. But Cody Miller, Hammonds, Profitt, Smith... they are the elite area players. I never said that I was an old South Laurel fan. I'm fairly new to all of this sports stuff.

Teague only has two years...so a few is out of the question. You know Les was making the point that the guy was only talking about the teams he covers. The News Journal does not cover South Laurel. Now you are saying that Teague belongs in the league with Miller, Crawford, etc.....Teague plays for Wburg.....not South Laurel....so what is the point? There were several Wburg players mentioned. In all honesty, the article should have been shortened by about five players in the area.

Cody Miller plays for Knox and they don't cover Know either. The newspapers coverage area is Corbin, whitley, lc and w'burg ... they have never covered the other schools.

IMO most newspapers only cover their local teams. I would not worry to much about what the News Journal prints they are one paper that really can't see past being local. The Corbin Times on the other hand have a tough task in covering so many boys and girls teams in the tri-counties but most of the time pull it off pretty well. Can't recall his name but the fellow at the news journal before Knuckles did a great job they have went way down hill after he left, even much more so after Knuckles stopped doing sports.

My problem isn't with the fact that Teague did not make the list or that anyone else from Whitley, Lynn Camp, Corbin,or Williamsburg did or did not make the list. Each of these schools were represented. I may or may not agree his choices from each school, but thats my opinion and he has his. We could argue all day over who should be on the list or not and we could mix and match players to try to include everyones favorite from the above mentioned schools but we can't do that with South because they weren't represented at all. You all know that some of South's players are the best around here, better than some of the ones that actually made the list. When you pick the best of the best from our area, Miller should have been included an so should have several South players. Maybe he should have called the article "Players I Personally like from the area". That would have been more like it.

There is a big difference in including Somerset, Harlan, Clay County, Redbird, or OBI with Whitley, Williamsburg, and Corbin. That is a huge area. Corbin, Whitley, Williamsburg, Lynn Camp, and South are not that far apart in distance. I get that his paper doesn't cover the area in question but maybe, just maybe, they should. He recognized Corbin, Londons only a 10 minute drive from there. I work and live towards London and I buy the News Journal every week. There are many more just like me who do the same.
