The Playoffs Are Going To Be Nuts!!!

 

If this past weekend is any indication the College Football Playoffs are going to be absolutely insane.   

 

Shoot, the road to the SEC Championship Game is going to be insane.  

 

Vanderbilt beat #1 ranked Alabama this weekend and then threw the goalpost in the Cumberland River during their celebration.  

 

Arkansas defeated #4 ranked Tennessee.   

 

This is a week after Kentucky went down to #6 Ole Miss and defeated a Top 10 team on the road for the first time since 1977.   

 

Clemson is now a Top 10 team after being humiliated by Georgia in the first week of the season.   

 

Notre Dame is still in the hunt for the playoffs after paying 1.4 million dollars to Northern Illinois for giving Notre Dame a home loss.  

 

Texas, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State and Miami are the only undefeated teams in the Top 10.  

 

Iowa State, BYU, Indiana and Pittsburgh are the remaining undefeated teams in the Top 25.

 

There are still a total of 5 SEC teams in the Top 10 and a total of 9 overall in the Top 25.  

 

Arkansas, Kentucky and Vanderbilt are receiving votes for the Top 25 and South Carolina is still lurking around ready to ruin a team’s season as well.  

 

Long story short, the SEC is a gauntlet as always.  

 

The question remains.  

 

What team outside of the SEC will be strong enough to defeat the SEC teams they may have to face in the playoffs?  

 

Will the SEC teams beat each other up so much that they have nothing left in the playoffs?  

 

#2 Ohio State travels to #3 Oregon this week in a game that may or may not answer some questions for us. 

 

How good is Ohio State and is this year’s Oregon team good enough to defeat the “Elites” this season?  

 

Oregon has been a Top 10 team all season so their success isn’t a surprise.  

 

Ohio State has been steamrolling their opponents so far.  

 

With the exception of the Boise State game, Oregon has had little trouble with their opponents as well.  

 

Ohio State is favored -4 to win this game on the road at Oregon.  

 

Texas and Oklahoma will meet this weekend as well as the Red River Rivalry resumes.   

 

Texas is now ranked #1 following Alabama’s loss to Vanderbilt.  

 

Oklahoma would love nothing more than to take Texas off that throne and while that wouldn’t end Texas’ chances at making the playoffs it would exponentially increase Oklahoma’s chances as they sit at #18 in the rankings.  

 

Texas is favored by -14 to win this game.  That spread seems awful high for a rivalry game of this magnitude.  

 

Quinn Ewers is expected to return this week so that should give the Texas offense a shot in the arm.   

 

-14 just feels like a lot based on the way this season has played out.  

 

I do want to give a quick shout out to Miami and Cam Ward for their second dramatic comeback in back to back games.   

 

While Clemson is showing to be much improved it is still hard to bet against Miami winning the ACC.  

 

Clemson and even Louisville and Pittsburgh may challenge Miami as well as defeat them.  

 

Either way I expect one of those four teams to win the ACC and that team will likely be their only representative in the College Football Playoffs.     

 

BYU continues to impress and managed to move up 3 spots while on a BYE this week.   

 

Ranked at #14 if BYU can continue their winning ways they just may end up in the BIG 12 Championship Game with a true chance to make the playoffs.  

 

LSU, Texas A&M, Utah, Boise State and even Indiana are all right on the cusp of that playoff cutoff line with Oklahoma and Missouri needing some resume wins to get in the hunt and stay in the hunt for a playoff position.  

 

The College Football Playoff Rankings won’t be released until November 5th so we still have a long way to go before we even get to rank them.   

 

Who knows what will happen between now and then.   

 

Enjoy this upcoming weekend as there will be some great matchups taking place for our entertainment.  

 

Texas/Oklahoma

Ohio State/Oregon

Kansas State/Colorado

Penn State/USC

Ole Miss/LSU

 

Even Vanderbilt/Kentucky should be electric!!!

I am skeptical of Oregon.  Not buying Clemson as a Top 10 team either.  Jury's out on Ohio State for me.  

SEC is good, but I still think it's Texas, Georgia, Alabama...then the rest.

I echo these sentiments but if I have learned anything about this season of football it is to expect the unexpected.

Absolutely!  A lot of craziness so far.

I can't wait to see Texas win the big bad SEC in it's first season. ?
