Noah Lyles runs 200 meters final with Covid

Featured Replies

What are people's thoughts of Lyles running the 200 meter mens final at the Olympics with Covid and a 102 degree fever?  He won bronze in doing so, which in my opinion is amazing.

I'm not gonna lie, I'm torn. The adult in me says it was a bad choice and selfish given the fact that he put others at risk of contracting it. I myself view Covid as about the same as the flu nowadays. With that said, it can wreck some folks and some people are terrified still.

On the other side, as a relatively competitive athlete in my younger days. I'm not sure how I would've handled the situation if I possessed the same talent that Noah Lyles does. I'd like to think I'd go run 200m solo and see what I could've done had I ran the race but I don't think anyone really knows until they're in his shoes.

As the son of a doctor, my gut reaction is that he shouldn't have done it.   BUT.... We know a lot more about this disease than we did when it was first discovered in 2019 and started spreading across the globe in 2020.   I'm sure the team doctors and officials all weighed in and it was determined it was not a huge risk to him or others to participate.

But I'm still a better safe than sorry type guy.

A lot of factors here but all things considered, I have no problem with him running the race. It is open air, all the competitors are young and healthy. It is more of a risk to him than others. He wore a mask before and after the race. The only people I worried about were the health care providers attending to him at the end of the race.

COVID today is completely different than it was in 2019/20 when millions across the world died from it. Last year about 70,000 people died from COVID. COVID has dropped to the #10 cause of death in the US. Contrast that with 204,000 COVID deaths in 2022 and about 450,000 in 2021. We have reached a level of natural immunity and we have medicines that can treat those who get COVID.
