Any scoop or scuttlebut anyone hear around Rupp this week? I know it’s a big time between the movers and shakers. Lot of Athletic Directors, Coaches, Superintendents, Principals, players running around.   

Sat in front of Coach Reynolds Flynn(Covington Holmes) at the state tournament. Enjoyed a lot of his stories.

One other note. That 1978 team lost the state title on the worst non call in KHSAA history. There was goal tending on a shot that would have won the game for Holmes where the player had his arm going up through the net to block the shot. See below on the right.

That’s a great photo. Worst call I ever saw at KHSAA sweet 16 was 2003 against Daviess County HS. Horn went off, kid from the other team took two steps, dribbled, traveled, waved at his mom in the crowd, sneezed, bobbled, recovered, threw the ball through the rim, official counted it for the game winner, and disappeared like Harry Houdini. This was back when Rupp Arena was near capacity for most sessions. Everyone was booing. Even the crowd from the other team. 

Hazard’s loss  vs PRP in the semifinals in 1986 was some of the worst calls I’ve ever seen at the state tournament. The crowd stood and booed after the game for 20 minutes or more and unfortunately littered the floor with cups and other objects. A friend said he was listening to long time Hazard WSGS sports broadcaster Jay Lasslo’s broadcast and during a spate of calls and non calls against Hazard he said, “This is a bitter pill to swallow.” And he rarely ever made comments such as that.
