LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KTSM) – The New Mexico State men’s basketball team suspended operations indefinitely on Friday evening, according to the university.

In a statement, a university official said the program would be suspending operations, “until further notice.”

According to the university, NMSU personnel were recently made aware of new allegations, completely separate from the ongoing investigation into a deadly shooting involving NMSU basketball player Mike Peake and three University of New Mexico students.

This is a very odd story. New Mexico State, long a very strong mid-major in the western part of the US, has shut down their program, perhaps for the rest of the season. The Aggies have been to 26 NCAA Tournaments, including nine in the last thirteen years, and advanced to the second round last season. They have a new coach this season after their previous coach took the job at Mississippi State. There was criminal activity involving a shooting earlier this season, some talk of coaches not cooperating with law enforcement, and now this shutdown. Not sure what is happening but I really hope it isn't a Baylor-type thing from several years back.

Oddly enough, I've been a New Mexico State fan for several seasons because of a Dish Network quirk that somehow gave me free access to their games. I'll probably not be wearing my NMSU hoodie for a while now!

If it was indeed a hazing incident or incidents, then they are just stupid.   When will people learn that if you do stupid crap, people will find out.
