Scott County finalized a Week3 home and home in ‘23 ‘24 with the Cabell Midland Knights from West Virginia. Cards will travel to Ona in ‘23 and host at their new stadium in 2024.

Sounds like a great home and home.

I see they were 6-4 last year, 11-2 in 2021, 7-0 in 2020, and 14-1 in 2019 and I suppose lost in the state championship game that year.

Cabell Midland is by enrollment the largest school in West Virginia and would be a 6A school in Kentucky.

Cabell County is where Huntington, WV is located. Midland is just outside of Huntington between the tons of Milton and Barboursville. The school consolidated and had their first season in 1994.

Historically speaking, Midland has kind of underperformed for their overall enrollment. They have had numerous Semi-Finals appearances but they have yet to win a State Title. 

Former Lawrence County (KY) Head Coach Luke Salmons took over as Head Coach in 2011 and their greatest success has came under his watch. Salmons has led Midland to four Semi-Finals appearances and two State Runner-Up finishes. He also led them to undefeated regular seasons in 2012, 2015, and 2019. 

The last KY opponent the Knights played was Belfry in 2015,2016,2017, & 2018. Belfry went 3-1 in those years. 2015 was arguably the best team in Midland history and they spanked the eventual State Champion Pirates 49-7. That Midland team was the #1 team in WV but suffered a shocking upset in the playoffs.

The only other meeting with KY teams came in 2000 & 2001 when Midland split games with Lawrence County.

What can you expect?

Salmons has brought Midland to it's highwater mark as a program and they are usually a strong team who plays strong competition against the other big schools. With that said, Midland has been summitting and regressing his tenure. The Huntington area is traditionally outside of Martinsburg where the best football in WV is played. Usually Midland, Huntington, and Spring Valley are all pretty competitive with each other and alternate beating each other.

I don't know enough to know if Midland is back on the come up or not. When they are up they are as good as most 6A schools in KY outside of the Louisville powerhouses, when they are down they are similar to some of the generic Northern Kentucky 6A teams. Salmons prefers playing a ball control offense heavily predicated on their run game.

What I have always compared them to in terms of their roster makeup is Simon Kenton. Big numbers, no lack of size or individual talent, but they really need those bumper years with multiple elite players to overcome the fact that they traditionally struggle if you can defend the run. Not usually a ton of elite athletes or D-1 players, but they will produce some guys, especially up front.

Should be a competitive series.

Calpreps projects Scott County would have beaten Midland 31-21 at a neutral site this past season.
