Jumper_Dad
The U.S. Department of Energy announced a breakthrough in nuclear fusion on Tuesday that puts the world one step closer to harnessing an abundant energy source free from carbon emissions and long-lived radioactive waste. U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm confirmed that scientists achieved a reaction that created more energy than was used — known as a net energy gain — at the federally-funded Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California. https://finance.yahoo.com/news/nuclear-fusion-breakthrough-an-enormous-game-changer-constellation-energy-ceo-says-152313098.html This could potentially be the biggest scientific breakthrough in our lives. This makes clean energy a real possibility that may power the entire world.
bugatti
Was listening to something about this on the news this morning. It is not as if they powered a whole city with this breakthrough, but for the first time ever they accomplished a net gain, as the article references. Yes, promising indeed. Yes, this is just the first step...but it's a huge first step. The fact that there is no radioactive waste will make so many more applications possible. Powering deep space travel would be a direct benefit of this potential technology.
