4A District 1 Favorites Convene In Russellville

Records: Hopkinsville (2-3) | Logan County (4-1)

BGP Ranking: Hopkinsville (#9 in 4A) | Logan County (#7 in 4A)

Series History: Hopkinsville leads 6-5 dating back to 1998

Table Setter: Anytime two top ten teams meet up, you expect a battle. But when you take into account that last year's games - they met twice - were decided by scores of 13-12 and 39-37, it heightens expectations that much more. Hoptown and Logan County have blossomed into one of the better rivalries in WKY over the last five years. The Cougars hold a 5-3 advantage since their breakthrough year in 2017 under Coach Adler.

Hopkinsville's schedule has run as hot and cold as any team's in the state. The Tigers' two wins are against teams with a combined record of 1-9. The three teams responsible for Hoptown losses are 14-1. This is a game where playing Ballard, Mayfield, and Bowling Green can pay off in a big way. Another way to increase your chances of success is to get the ball in the hands of dynamic playmaker Daisjaun Mercer. He's all-state good on both sides of the ball, but has been relatively quiet this year.

Class 4A's fourth leading rusher, Ryan Rayno, fuels Logan County's offense. He's run for over a hundred yards in each game this season, as he did in both games versus Hoptown last year.

I think this is going to be another battle between these teams. Logan is a legit 4A contender imo that has had an amazing run under Todd Adler and his staff. Hopkinsville is always talented enough to make a run but always seems to struggle with consistency. That early season schedule was a doozy.

Teams have doubled, tripled, and even quadruple teamed Daisjaun Mercer for Hoptown and have dared someone else to beat them. On defense Bowling Green was the only team to take a shot on him at safety and he intercepted the pass. Teams just aren’t attacking him at all.

Logan has home-field advantage but both teams have won as the home team and away teams before. Expect another nail-biter this weak.

Mercer was a genuine Mr. Football contender when the season began, but that ship has probably sailed, through no fault of his own. He had some ballers around him last year that aren't there now. Losing those kids took a bite out of the offense. We should finally start to get a handle on where they fit into the 4A picture. The talent around Mercer has had to grow up fast in the first half of the season.

I’m going with Logan but I also thought they would win last week and it didn’t happen so who knows.

Mercer being a "genuine" Mr. Football contender might be a little of a stretch... but I like Logan here.  Adler has done an amazing job with that staff and had some amazing football players the past few years.  This District is really a 2 team race with one dark horse and 2 clean ups. Logan and Hopkinsville are 1 and 2.  Madisonville could make a push when McAdoo is full go; him and Hightower will be a good 1-2 punch to finish the season.  Hop Central is a little unclear to me, totally new team after losing that QB.  I don't think their a great team, but they've won some games.  Bad team playing bad teams.  Calloway is bad.  Have a lot of freshmen playing on Fridays. A bad/young team playing some pretty good teams....  Should be a good battle for first place between these two.
