Steve Barker is the new head coach at Caverna

Recommended Posts

Barker has been a coach for 37 years, with his most recent stop at Green County where they finished 10-17 last season. Before that Barker coached at Apollo and led them to a state tournament appearance. He also was head coach for 2 colleges in Georgia.

Steve Barker was at Greenup County and not Green County. Those are 2 totally different places. Steve is also Caverna's AD as well.

Yes Greenup County that was a typo on my part.

Folks around here already know all this I would guess, but Barker was a great player too, first team all-state when KY regularly turned out high DI talent.  Barker was not high DI, he went to Samford, but on the high school level he was right there with the other first team all staters who did go to a power school: Jerry Eaves (UofL), Vince Taylor (Duke), Charles Hurt (UK), Doug Schloemer (UC), Dirk Minniefield (UK), and Barker's Apollo teammate Jeff Jones (UVA).  Apollo was undefeated headed to the Sweet 16 but lost in the first round to 1978 champs Shelby Co.  Even playing in a first round loss Barker made the all state tournament team.

Steve Barker was a really nice player.  A pure shooter, he scored over 1800 points at Samford, and that was before the 3-point shot.  There is no telling how many more points he could have scored, both in high school and in college, if the 3-point goal had been in effect when he played.  That 1978 Apollo team won the LIT on its way to an undefeated regular season.
