Hopefully no one does it, it certainly takes away from spirit of the award and moves it closer to a popularity contest and that is bad for everyone involved.

It happens. I don't know about football (I just assume it happens), but Mr and Ms Basketball are impacted that way. Check it out in the region where you reside.
