Prestonsburg High School - Josh Francis Field

Prestonsburg's field is named for PHS Class of 2003 football player/wrestler Josh Francis who died in his junior year in an Aug '01 car accident.

Paris High School - Burl Clark Field at Blanton Collier Stadium

Paris High School Greyhounds named its Stadium after Blanton Collier who coached at Paris High School (1928 and 1943), Great Lakes Navy as Assistant (1944-1945), Cleveland Browns as Assistant (1946-1953), University of Kentucky (1954 and 1961), Cleveland Browns as Assistant (1962) and then Cleveland Browns (1963 and 1970).

Paris High School Field is named after former player Burl Clark who I believe died on the Bus coming home after an away game. This was in the 1950’s, I believe.

Johnson Central’s field was renamed “Coach Jim Matney Stadium” tonight.

Named for SHS '32 graduate, football and basketball team captain, long-time coach and athletic director William Clark.

Russell High School - Ivan McGlone Field at Henry R. Evans Stadium

The Red Devils' stadium is named for named for Evans, a longtime superintendent of Russell Independent School, and Ivan McGlone, the longtime football coach who led the team to 2 state championships.

Danville High School - Rice Mountjoy Field at Admiral Stadium

Danville's field is named for J. Rice Mountjoy, basketball & football coach and athletic director at Danville from 1925-1940. He was 92-25-9 as football coach and his Admiral football teams shut out 66 opponents.

Dixie Heights High School - Bill Shannon Field at Rice Mountjoy Stadium

Dixie's stadium is named for former football/basketball coach & athletic director J. Rice Mountjoy, and the field is named for Bill Shannon, who was Mountjoy's successor in all three of those roles.

Owensboro High School - Rash Stadium

Owensboro's Rash Stadium is named for Dr. Otway Watkins Rash, Jr, who single-handedly conducted the fundraiser to build the original $10,000 version of the stadium in 1923 prior to its renovation in 1940.

Stadium "shares" were sold for $100 each - equating to about $1600 each by today's standard.









(So...the picture with the tree...that's Dr. Rash in 1961 attempting to wrap his arms around the 300 year old sassafras tree in his front yard in Owensboro. It's still there, and has been verified as the largest sassafras tree in North America and is suspected to be the largest in the world.)

Johnson Central's field was renamed in honor of Coach Jim Matney, who coached the Golden Eagles from 2004 until his passing in 2021. His teams won 2 football state titles.
