KHSAA Class AA Track & Field Championship

Recommended Posts

Garrard County has seven participants (likely a school record) and two kids that are among the favorites in three events. I’m headed up this morning. I’ve never been to a track meet of any kind so this is pretty exciting!

Great! Good luck to them! It’s fun watching all the kids compete, especially against the best in state.

The Highlands boys are aiming for their (*checks notes* 1920, 1959, 2014 ✓) fourth team title today.

Here's a picture of the 1959 champions, led by football studs Dennis Sprous, Richie Emmons, Don Dapper, and Gary Herfel. Coach Bernie Sadosky is on the right.

At the State meet in '59, Herfel placed 2nd in the DT and Emmons 5th in the LJ. Sprous was the star of the meet, winning three events - 100, 220, and a member of the 880 Relay with Emmons, Dapper, and Mike First.

The youngest of this lot would be 75 today. Bring it home 'Birds!

For the second day in a row, another close team finish took place in the boys state championship meet at the University of Kentucky. Mercer County won it's third Class AA title with a 3 1/2 point win over Highlands.

Congratulations to the Titans and Coach Terry Yeast!

Top performances? Too many to list, but there were excellent two to three deep efforts in the 800m Run, 3200m Run, Shot Put, and Discus Throw.

For three athletes returning next year, the future is now.

• JB Terrill (JR, Boyd Co.) fell just 0.20 sec short of breaking Thomas Canary's (Lex Cath) Class AA record in the 800m with his winning time of 1:54.25.

• Andrew Hardwick (SO, Boyle Co.), ranked fourth in the Shot Put coming into the meet, won his first state title with a 53-11.75 toss.

• Adam Patel's (SO, North Oldham) 9:36.61, for second place in the 3200m, is the No. 2 performance all-time for Class AA sophomores.

Noticed in passing:

UK football signee Treyveon Longmire (SR, Corbin) was a member of the Redhounds' second place 4x400m Relay team.

Jack Banks (JR, Highlands), this year's state swim meet - 100 backstroke champion, was on the Bluebirds' second place 4x800m Relay squad.

Outstanding!
