Region 8 favorite Oldham County kicks off action at the Roy L. Winchester gymnasium at Henry County HS as the Colonels face off with the Rebels of Owen County.

Oldham County comes in as champions of the 29th district, the 10th district title for Oldham in the last 11 years.

Owen County returns to the 8th Region tournament for the first time since 2016, as the runner-ups in the 31st.   

Oldham is led by three All-Region performers, seniors Tyler Slone (13.9 ppg), Deaton Oak (11.0 ppg), and Sam Campbell (10.0 ppg).    The Colonels feature one of the largest teams in the region, with a starting lineup that features 6'6" senior Xander Wagner-Rose in the middle and 6'5" Slone at the high post / wing.    Off the bench, the Colonels bring in 6'10" junior center Hayden Burgess, 6'6" junior wing Sam Powell, and 6'4" forward Clay Smith.   One of the top shooting teams in the region, Oldham hits 49% from the floor overall, 39% from beyond the arc, and 76% at the line (#7 in KY).   The Colonels are perhaps the region's most veteran team, starting five seniors, all of whom starting some or all of last year.

Owen County, one of the region's younger teams, boasts some of the region's most outstanding up-and-coming underclassmen, led by 6'6" all-region sophomore guard Teagan Moore, the second-leading scorer in the region at 29.0 ppg.   Moore averages a double-double as he also records 10.6 rebounds a game.    Devin Duvall's youth movement also includes junior forward Isaac Wash (11 ppg) and big 6'8" freshman center Brax Ward.   Like the Colonels, Owen shoots the ball well, hitting 48% from the floor overall, 33% from beyond the arc, and 76.8% at the line, fifth-best in the state.  Moore alone averages 80% at the line, and takes 10 free throws a game.

The two teams have played no common opponents this year.

Oldham's biggest victories of the year came over #5 DeSales and then-#12 Eastern.

Owen's biggest victories of the year to date was a 65-56 victory over Henry County (17-9) on January 19th.

This is Oldham County's tournament to lose.  They should handle Owen easily tonight and will probably play what could be the "championship game" on Friday night against Collins.  Oldham has too much experience, size and depth for most others in the 8th region tournament.  They are the only team in New Castle without a loss in the region, and they toughened their schedule this year.  Anything short of a region championship and a deep run in Lexington might be viewed as a disappointment in Buckner.

A minor hurdle that OC may have to overcome is how the games are called by non-8th region officials.  The Colonels probably benefit more than anyone from the officiating in the "friendly confines" of the 8th region with their style of play and aggressive defense.  As Coach Simpson has said, they will grab, push and foul you on each play and know that the officials won't call every one!  A tight whistle by out-of-region refs might lead to more foul trouble than OC is used to, but they still have the depth to overcome it and are the overwhelming favorite to cut down the nets on Saturday.

Sounds like the Gallatin-Owen game in the 31st District semifinals. Gallatin trailed 33-10 at halftime and went to a full court press to start the 3rd quarter.                             
Coach Jones instructed his players to foul on every defensive possession because the officials can’t or won’t call them all.         
They got within 74-71 with 24 seconds left before losing 76-71.
