All state teams: potential vs performance?

Featured Replies

I agree with a lot of what you stated, other than I do think its part of the coach"s job description to try and get players the awards, and to do so by phone calls, e mails, and if necessary sending game tapes to the voters, particularly with the AP team for the some of the very reasons you stated.

I agree. To a certain point a coach may not want to push one player more than another, or hold to the "This is a team game" mentality, but when you have players that you know are good enough to get recognized...well, recognize them. If a coach expects a player to bust his tail for the good of the team, and his exceptional performance contributes greatly to the team's and, ulitmately, the coach's success, the coach should push to honor the kid. I've never understood the coaches who don't push their players on recruiters. If the kid is going to give up a lot of time and expend a lot of effort for the betterment of the program, a coach owes the kid the duty of promoting him.

In defense of the "AP's 16 voters" they are kind of stuck with a tough task in a cyber world.

40 years ago in 1966 they (AP Voters) were pretty much all anyone had and you really couldn't contest their judgement because it was unlikely to "see" any teams not in your area.

Now we can sit at our computers and watch video of teams all over the state on TV station/newspaper web sites etc. Or we can read newspapers from any part of the state. Or we can listen to Internet broadcasts. Or we can log on to Bluegrasspreps etc. So basically fans can be more "educated" than the AP voters who probably can't do all that because they are covering their local team.

Could coaches help that situation by pushing for their players? Possibly, but would voters have the time to watch tapes a coach sent? Could coaches schedule their team around the state? Possibly, but that might hurt your chances with your local AP guy (who is most likely your best ally) who only saw your team once or twice and saw your rival four or five times.

Other States have All-State Teams for each Class. Why doesn't KY?

I know all the 4A fans will start screaming about "cheapening the honor", but there are a lot of kids who would be looked at very differently if they played on a big-school team that had a good line, or a decent QB, or whatever their small school was missing.

That is a good point. However, I doubt we will ever see that happen in this state. The sad truth is that kids from small programs are overlooked year in and year out when it comes to these type of honors. If a kids dominates in class A its because the competition was weak.
