From the article, 12 team and 8 team format are both being heavily considered, despite the 12 team format being met with enthusiasm across the board back in June.

Texas and Oklahoma going to the SEC has obviously caused pause from the other commissioners and AD's. 

Article doesn't state it, but things seem to be trending toward an 8 team playoff instead with the recent B12/SEC expansion.
