The Brossart Mustangs, much improved since falling to Nicholas County 28-6 back on October 4th in Alexandria, took advantage of a first quarter Blue Jackets turnover, and marched 36 yards for a Brossart touchdown. The TD was a 3 yard quarterback keeper by Jacob Leicht and a successful PAT by Andrew Schwartz. The quarter ended 7-0 in favor of the Mustangs.

Nicholas County scored two unanswered touchdowns in the second stanza, a 49 yard drive and a 74 yard drive, with both scores attributed to Cain Salcedo - both 2 yard plunges. The Jackets failed on both 2-Point attempts. 12-6 Nicholas County at halftime.

Unlike the previous game where the Mustangs failed to mount a serious offensive drive after our first offensive series, Jacob Leicht marched the Mustangs 60 yards on two pass plays to take the lead at 13-12 and cause the home crowd some anxious moments. The scoring drive consisted of a 24 yard pass to Sophomore David Govan and a 36 yard scoring toss to Senior Devin Carson. The PAT attempt was no good and the period ended with the Mustangs on top 13-12.

After stopping the Jackets deep in Brossart territory on 4th and 1, the Mustangs failed to mount an offensive drive, and on their next opportunity we were not so lucky, seeing Nicholas County drive 52 yards for Salcedo's third touchdown of the night, taking an 18-13 lead after yet another failed 2-point attempt.

The game would go into the record books as an 18-13 Blue Jackets win as the Mustangs failed to answer. Brossart closes the book on a 7-5 season that will see the graduation of six seniors. Nicholas County advances to the third round of the Class 1-A playoffs next Friday night at either Pikeville, Paintsville, or Williamsburg. .

Terrific season by both clubs. Really enjoyed seeing both teams progress. Nicholas will face a huge challenge at Pikeville but Even if they lose that district championship trophy will look mighty nice in the display case. As for Brossart, I suspect this is just the first of many district championship playoff games.
