Mustang
God must have thought that this was our opening night of Football, as that predicted slight chance of showers and thunderstorms became a gully washer of monumental proportions just an hour prior to game time, resulting in a delayed start time, and a cancelled game across I-471 between Bellevue and Dayton. For the majority of the first period when our guys were fresh, the two teams traded possessions before the Newport Wildcats drew first blood at the 2:38 mark of the opening quarter, when the Cats orchestrated a 69 yard drive that culminated in a 3 yard plunge by James Martin, resulting in six points going onto the scoreboard, and a Julian Maxwell PAT, made it 7-0. That was how the first quarter ended. The Mustangs attempted to answer mid-second quarter marching the ball from our own 43 yard line to the Newport 20 where the drive stalled out. Newport tacked on a second TD shortly thereafter when Martin scored his second touchdown of the night making it a 13-0 lead at halftime. Fatigue factored large in the second half as the Division I signee, quarterback Kaleal Davis, ran roughshod over our defense scoring on four occasions, on runs of 40 yards, 36 yards, 77 yards, and 27 yards. We simply could not stop him. Meanwhile, while down 26-0, the Mustangs rallied to put six on the board, as Trevor Schadler scored on a 13 yard scamper, making it 26-8, which would evolve into a final score of 38-6. Late in the first half the Mustangs lost the services of Senior Running Back Sam Howard to an ankle injury and he did not return to the game. Jed Martin stepped into Trevor's pistol partner position, and did the best he could while being grossly out-sized by the Newport defense. With the win the Wildcats improve to 2-0 and host Carroll County next Friday night, while the Mustangs will return to Class 1A independent competition against the Bellevue Tigers at Gilligan Stadium. Mr. Sixer
Nice to see Kaleal have a great game. Can’t wait to see him in Terre Haute next year. He’ll be a great addition on either side of the ball. Good luck the rest of the way Wildcats!
Mustang
Correction - Kaleal Davis scored three running touchdowns - 46, 36, and 27 yards. The 77 yard touchdown was actually a pass play from Davis to Simon Keating.
