Sprite Slam Dunk contest competitors will be announced on Monday, Feb. 5. WASHINGTON -- The big rematch with Kobe Bryant turned out to be too big for Gilbert Arenas, who psyched himself out before the game even started. Departing from his usual happy-go-lucky routine, Arenas donned his headphones 90 minutes before tipoff and had the edgy nervousness of a kid waiting in a lobby for a job interview. That's no way to approach a game against the Los Angeles Lakers, especially when Bryant is seeking to settle a score. Round 2 went to Bryant on Saturday night as two of the NBA's most riveting playmakers tried to outdo each other, point for point, flashy move for flashy move. The Los Angeles star scored 39 points in the Lakers' 118-102 victory over Arenas and the Washington Wizards. "I've got to stop doing that serious thing before the game," Arenas said. "I've got to be my goofy self. I was too serious, and I think that's why I struggled early." Arenas dropped a franchise-record 60 points in a 147-141 overtime win at Los Angeles on Dec. 17, but he set the tone Saturday with an airball on the game's first possession. He went 9-for-29 from the field and finished with 37 points -- mainly because he was 16-for-17 from the free throw line. Arenas said he had tried the "serious thing" once before. The first time was Game 1 of last year's first-round playoff series, when he struggled in a loss to LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. "It's not working," Arenas said. "No smiling, no talking, just listening to music. I'm usually having fun. I'm out here telling jokes, listening to jokes, running around, punching on people, the usual. OK, OK. We can say it with a touch more invention and relevance: What a difference bad starts make! Imagine, if you will, that the Mavericks and Suns didn't combine to go 0-4 and 1-5, respectively, in the first couple weeks of November. I imagine we'd be dealing daily with 70 Wins Talk, which pretty much never comes up now like it did throughout last season's first half with the Detroit Pistons. The 38-9 Mavs and 37-9 Suns, after all, became just the third pair of teams in NBA history to enter February with an .800 winning percentage. The only times that happened previously for two teams in the same season: 1984-85 and 1980-81. The fallen giants from Boston and Philadelphia, in both cases, were the dueling rivals playing .800 ball as they entered the final three months of the regular season. This season?
February 5, 200719 yr I can't see either team losing only 3 games the rest of the way through... They're both very good... But they still play each other again twice... Assuming they split those games, I still think they'll lose a couple more games along the way... Catch a hot Rockets team or maybe the Lakers... Something like that.. Clippers may beat them... With 9 losses already, I think saying 70 wins for either team is a stretch. I hope one of them do though!
